Arkema Achieves ISCC PLUS Certification for Bio-Attributed Resins in Malaysia, Advancing Sustainability in Specialty Materials

(IN BRIEF) Arkema has achieved ISCC PLUS certification for its acrylic and liquid polyester resins production facility in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia, expanding its portfolio of bio-attributed materials. This certification is part of Arkema’s global Mass Balance initiative, aimed at offering sustainable solutions to industries such as coatings, adhesives, and green mobility. By using a Mass Balance methodology, Arkema ensures that biobased feedstock replaces fossil-based raw materials in production. The certification aligns with Arkema’s broader strategy to provide high-quality, sustainable materials with lower carbon footprints, reinforcing its leadership in the transition to a greener, more circular economy.

(PRESS RELEASE) COLOMBES, 4-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has further strengthened its commitment to sustainability by securing ISCC PLUS certification for its acrylic and liquid polyester resins (OFPE) production facility in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia. This new certification is a key milestone in Arkema’s global Mass Balance* initiative, aimed at providing more sustainable solutions for industries across Southeast Asia. The company is now able to offer its customers in rapidly growing sectors such as coatings, adhesives for renewable energy, green mobility, infrastructure efficiency, and living comfort, a broader range of environmentally responsible materials.

The ISCC PLUS certification for the Pasir Gudang facility follows similar certifications achieved by Arkema’s sites in the United States, Europe, and China. This move is part of Arkema’s strategy to progressively introduce a comprehensive range of bio-attributed specialty resins and additives, including high-solids, waterborne, UV/LED/EB resins, and polyester powders, which are made from renewable resources and carry a lower carbon footprint.

Arkema’s Mass Balance methodology is a key element of its bio-attributed products. This methodology enables manufacturers to trace certified materials as they move through the value chain, ensuring that biobased feedstock replaces fossil-based raw materials at the beginning of the production process. Through certified bookkeeping, the Mass Balance system guarantees that both inputs and outputs are balanced, providing transparency and accountability for the sustainability of Arkema’s products.

Yoon Hock CHONG, Managing Director of ACRM Coating Solutions Southeast Asia, stated, “The ISCC PLUS certification of our Pasir Gudang site is a significant step toward advancing Arkema’s sustainability goals. This certification broadens the availability of bio-attributed materials across the region, reinforcing our dedication to offering customers more sustainable solutions and contributing to the transition toward a greener, more circular economy.”

The achievement in Malaysia adds to Arkema’s growing portfolio of bio-attributed liquid resins solutions derived from renewable sources. This new range of advanced materials is part of Arkema’s broader initiative to offer products with up to 100% biobased content, continuing its efforts to drive sustainability in the specialty materials sector.
