AFRY to Design Track and Catenary Upgrades for Sweden’s Western Main Line Between Stockholm and Gothenburg

(IN BRIEF) AFRY has been selected by the Swedish Transport Administration to design key upgrades to the Western Main Line, Sweden’s crucial rail link between Stockholm and Gothenburg. The project includes full track renewal and modernization of the catenary system along the stretch between Katrineholm and Hallsberg, enhancing the line’s capacity, reliability, and punctuality. Covering all phases of the design process from planning to construction documentation, AFRY will deliver designs by 2027–2028, with overall completion expected by 2032. Valued between 50–100 million SEK, the project underscores AFRY’s central role in strengthening Sweden’s rail infrastructure for the future.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 14-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to lead the design of track renewal and catenary system upgrades on the Western Main Line, one of Sweden’s most important railway corridors linking Stockholm and Gothenburg. The project represents a major step toward strengthening Sweden’s rail infrastructure and ensuring the long-term reliability of one of its most heavily trafficked routes for both passenger and freight services.

The extensive upgrade includes track renewal between Baggetorp and Pålsboda, alongside a large-scale modernization of the catenary system from Hallsberg to Sköldinge. These measures are designed to improve network capacity, enhance punctuality, and support the growing volume of rail traffic along this critical section of the national network.

AFRY’s scope of work encompasses the full design process, from developing tender and construction documentation to managing regulatory submissions and asset data. The assignment will be executed in several phases, with design deliverables scheduled for 2027–2028 and the full project expected to be completed by 2032.

Commenting on the contract, Folke Sandberg, Head of Road & Rail Sweden at AFRY, said: “We are proud to contribute to future-proofing the Western Main Line. By increasing capacity on one of the busiest sections of the Swedish rail network, we are helping to ensure more reliable and sustainable transport for both passengers and freight.”

The project has an estimated contract value of between 50 and 100 million SEK, spanning from 2025 to 2032. Through this collaboration, AFRY continues to play a key role in developing sustainable and efficient transportation infrastructure across Sweden.
