Philips Strategic Alliance with WellSpan Health Brings Coordinated Imaging Technology and Research Collaboration to 12 Hospitals

(IN BRIEF) Royal Philips and WellSpan Health have announced a seven-year strategic alliance to advance diagnostics, imaging, artificial intelligence, research and innovation across Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland. The collaboration will make Philips WellSpan’s preferred vendor for applicable imaging technologies, including CT, MR, digital X-ray, ultrasound and image-guided therapy, across WellSpan’s 12 hospitals, diagnostic imaging centres and ambulatory surgery centres. A major focus of the agreement is technology lifecycle management, with Philips and WellSpan coordinating equipment, service, training and upgrades under a single framework to improve imaging availability and patient access across the system. The alliance also includes a research agreement and joint innovation strategy, described as the first of its kind between Philips and a U.S. community health system. Research will examine how AI and digital tools can improve workflow efficiency, throughput and cost performance, supporting WellSpan’s goal of reclaiming more than half a million hours of workforce time annually. Through the partnership, WellSpan and Philips Research will also co-develop new healthcare technology products and features, using WellSpan as both a real-world clinical testing environment and a co-creation partner.

(PRESS RELEASE) Amsterdam, 4-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Royal Philips and WellSpan Health have entered into a seven-year strategic alliance designed to advance imaging, diagnostics, artificial intelligence and research-led innovation across Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.

The collaboration brings together Philips’ global health technology expertise and WellSpan’s position as a leading community health system to support a more coordinated, technology-enabled model of care. The agreement will introduce advanced diagnostic and imaging platforms across WellSpan’s network while also creating a research and co-development framework focused on the future of care delivery.

The alliance covers WellSpan’s 12 hospitals, diagnostic imaging centres and ambulatory surgery centres. Under the commercial component of the agreement, Philips will become WellSpan’s preferred vendor for applicable imaging modalities, including CT, MR, digital X-ray, ultrasound and image-guided therapy. The arrangement is intended to create a more consistent technology experience across sites, helping patients access reliable imaging services wherever they receive care within the WellSpan system.

A key part of the collaboration is its structured approach to technology lifecycle management. WellSpan and Philips will coordinate equipment planning, service, training and upgrades under a single framework. This is expected to support greater imaging availability, reduce access gaps between locations and provide a stronger foundation for future technology adoption.

The partnership also includes a research agreement and joint innovation strategy described as the first of its kind between Philips and a U.S. community health system. The research programme will focus on validating the performance of new digital and AI-enabled tools in real-world clinical environments. Areas of study are expected to include how artificial intelligence and digital technologies can improve patient throughput, lower costs and increase workflow efficiency.

The research and innovation work also supports WellSpan’s broader ambition to reclaim more than half a million hours of workforce time each year. By using AI and digital platforms to streamline processes and reduce operational burden, the health system aims to give clinical teams more time to focus on patient care.

WellSpan will also work with Philips Research to co-develop new products and features that address practical clinical and operational needs. Through this model, WellSpan will serve both as a testing environment and as a co-creator, contributing frontline clinical insight to the development of future healthcare technologies from Philips’ research and development pipeline.

Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., WellSpan president and CEO, said the health system’s growth in clinical capability has increased the need for a more intentional approach to planning, deploying and supporting essential medical technology. She said the collaboration will bring greater consistency and coordination across WellSpan, while advancing digital and AI-enabled care and building a research and co-development platform with the potential to shape the future of healthcare. She added that community health systems are where most Americans receive care and should play a central role in healthcare innovation.

Roy Jakobs, CEO of Royal Philips, said the alliance builds on the long-standing relationship between Philips and WellSpan while marking a new stage in their collaboration. He said combining Philips’ health technology leadership with WellSpan’s clinical expertise and research focus creates a long-term platform for improving patient care quality, operational performance and innovation. He added that the partnership will support a scalable, AI-driven and platform-based approach to care delivery.

The alliance further strengthens WellSpan’s expanding innovation ecosystem and positions the organisation as a leader in applying artificial intelligence and advanced technology within a community health system setting. For Philips, the agreement extends its work with healthcare providers seeking to improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and technology standardisation through long-term strategic partnerships.
