(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 30-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, marks a major milestone with the opening of the Riyadh Metro, a transformative project aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Spearheaded by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), this 176-kilometer network of six lines, 85 stations, and seven depots sets a global benchmark in urban transportation. The system is poised to revolutionize public transit in the Kingdom, supporting economic diversification, environmental goals, and enhanced quality of life for residents.

Projected to accommodate up to 3.6 million passengers daily, the Riyadh Metro is designed to significantly reduce private vehicle reliance, saving approximately 1 million gallons of fuel annually and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by millions of tons, including CO₂, NOₓ, and particulate matter.

Alstom’s Role in a Transformational Project

As a key partner, Alstom delivered 47 Innovia metro trains for the Orange line and 69 Metropolis trains for the Yellow, Green, and Purple lines, all tailored for Riyadh’s specific needs. These trains, combined with Alstom’s advanced Urbalis CBTC signaling system and HESOP regenerative braking technology, ensure safe, efficient, and energy-optimized operations. The project represents Alstom’s 100th metro line launch and stands as the largest single-phase turnkey metro project in the rail industry.

Phased Operations Schedule:

  • Yellow (Line 4) and Purple (Line 6) commence operations December 1.
  • Green (Line 5) launches December 15.
  • Orange (Line 3) begins January 5.

Alstom will also provide long-term maintenance services for trains, tracks, and key systems, ensuring reliability and operational excellence.

A Symbol of Sustainability and Progress

Andrew DeLeone, Alstom’s President for Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, highlighted the metro’s significance:
“The Riyadh Metro exemplifies the Kingdom’s forward-thinking approach to urban development. Together with RCRC, we are driving the energy transition, empowering communities, and fostering sustainable economic growth.”
