ver.di Chairman Frank Werneke welcomes plans for basic child security, calls for better social justice in tax and financial policy

(IN BRIEF) The United Services Union (ver.di) has welcomed the plans of Germany’s Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus for basic child security and called for greater weight for social policy in the decisions of the federal government. The chairman of ver.di emphasized that it is a disgrace that a large number of children are still growing up in poverty in a rich country like Germany, and that children must be protected more effectively from poverty. The plan by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs not to count the basic child security against the parents’ basic income is seen as a positive step. However, the implementation of the plans must not be blocked by individual departments, particularly the Federal Ministry of Finance, in the traffic light coalition (Ampelkoalition).

(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 22-Jan-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — ver.di, a German trade union working towards good work, fair wages, work-life balance, equal rights and more, has announced that it welcomes the plans of Germany’s Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus for basic child security and calls for greater weight for social policy in the decisions of the federal government. “In a rich country like Germany it is a disgrace that a large number of children are still growing up in poverty. In view of the demographic development, not a single child must be left behind. Children must be protected more effectively from poverty,” emphasized ver.di chairman Frank Werneke on Sunday. The plan by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs not to count the basic child security against the parents’ basic income is absolutely correct. “Sufficient support and encouragement for the children are essential for the future of our country,” said Werneke.

At the end of the week, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs specified the plans for the reorganization of state aid for families. According to this, funding should become simpler, more targeted and more transparent in the future.

However, the implementation of the plans must not be blocked by individual departments in the traffic light coalition (Ampelkoalition), especially the Federal Ministry of Finance. “The traffic light coalition has to get better at fulfilling the claim to create more social justice – also because the tax and financial policy is characterized by a bias in favor of the higher earners. Now we finally have to think about the sections of the population that are at risk of poverty,” explained Werneke.
