University of York partners with NatWest to establish accelerator hub and strengthen regional innovation

(IN BRIEF) The University of York has entered a major partnership with NatWest to advance regional entrepreneurship and economic growth, establishing a new NatWest Accelerator hub on campus where founders can develop skills, test ideas, and scale their businesses with hands-on support. The collaboration places York among only four universities in the latest cohort — and one of just two to host an onsite hub — positioning the institution as a central driver of innovation across the North of England. Alongside physical workspace, entrepreneurs will gain 24/7 access to digital guidance, while NatWest data shows accelerator businesses typically more than double turnover annually. University leaders highlighted the programme as a transformative step for commercialising research, retaining talent and strengthening the region’s innovation ecosystem, expanding York’s enterprise support and opening new networks, funding pathways and skills development for start-ups and scale-ups.

(PRESS RELEASE) YORK, 27-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of York has unveiled a landmark strategic partnership with NatWest designed to accelerate regional economic development, strengthen enterprise capability across the North, and nurture the next wave of founders and high-growth businesses. Central to the collaboration is the launch of a dedicated NatWest Accelerator hub on campus — a physical innovation space where entrepreneurs will be able to develop commercial skills, experiment with ideas, collaborate with peers and industry, and take promising ventures to market with the support of experienced business mentors.

Alongside the new facility, participants will also gain access to a comprehensive digital toolkit through a dedicated app, providing 24-hour support, learning resources, and growth guidance for business founders at every stage of their journey.

York is among only four universities to be selected for this new phase of NatWest partnerships, joining a high-profile group that includes the University of Oxford and the University of Manchester. Notably, York is one of just two institutions awarded a fully-fledged onsite accelerator hub, demonstrating its growing influence as a northern powerhouse for innovation, commercialisation, talent development, and enterprise-led research impact.

Speaking about the partnership, Robert Begbie — CEO of Commercial & Institutional Banking at NatWest Group — emphasised that the initiative brings together NatWest’s decade-long accelerator expertise and the University of York’s strengths in research, innovation and entrepreneurial culture. He highlighted the role of responsible banking in supporting local economies, stating that collaborations with universities enable shared strengths to benefit communities and stimulate economic progress across the wider region.

The announcement follows NatWest research showing that businesses completing the accelerator experience an average turnover increase of 104% annually — an indicator of the programme’s potential to contribute significantly to Yorkshire’s commercial growth.

By establishing the hub at York, both partners aim to reinforce the economic fabric of the region by bolstering startup formation and scale-up activity, creating high-value employment, and translating research breakthroughs into viable commercial businesses. This approach is expected to retain talent locally, enhance productivity, and position York as a driving force in a fast-evolving innovation landscape.

Professor Kiran Trehan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise, Partnerships and Engagement at the University of York, described the region as one fuelled by creativity, and stated that the new accelerator will further empower students, staff and founders to develop bold ideas and commercialise research with real-world impact. She noted that NatWest’s in-person programmes will strengthen entrepreneurial capability, while international partnerships will enable innovations developed in York to scale globally.

The initiative builds substantially on the University’s existing enterprise portfolio, opening up wider routes to mentorship, capital, academic expertise and industry collaboration — ensuring founders at every growth stage have access to the support, networks and investment pathways required to succeed.
