Transport for London Selects Indra for Long-Term Operation and Evolution of Citywide Ticketing and Access Control Network

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 16-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Indra Group  has secured one of the largest contracts in its history after being selected by Transport for London (TfL) to operate, maintain, develop and expand the ticketing and access control systems across London’s entire public transport network through 2034, with extension options running to 2039. The agreement is valued at £524 million, with the potential to exceed £845 million if all options are exercised, underscoring Indra’s growing role as a global leader in urban mobility technology.

Under the contract, Indra will become TfL’s strategic technology partner for one of the world’s most advanced and complex public transport ticketing ecosystems. The scope covers the full operational lifecycle of thousands of assets, including turnstiles, validators, ticket vending machines, retail sales terminals and portable inspection devices, as well as the supporting IT infrastructure, back-office platforms, payment gateways, data management systems and cybersecurity functions. Together, these systems support more than 8.6 million passenger journeys every day across London and its metropolitan area.

Following a transition period of nearly two years, Indra will act as the sole provider for the ticketing system across a network comprising more than 8,500 buses, close to 400 Underground stations, extensive Overground, DLR, Elizabeth Line and suburban rail services, thousands of Oyster Card retail outlets, customer service centres and ferry boarding points. The project also includes close collaboration with TfL to modernise the system and introduce new technologies that will automate processes, improve efficiency and enhance the overall passenger experience.

A major development under the programme will be the future implementation of Account-Based Ticketing on the Oyster Card system. This model enables more flexible fare structures, automatically applies the best fare for passengers and significantly improves convenience for users, marking a further step in the evolution of London’s digital transport infrastructure.

The contract further strengthens Indra’s Mobility business and consolidates its position among the world’s top three providers of public transport management and ticketing solutions.
