(PRESS RELEASE) LEINFELDEN-ECHTERDINGEN/ULM, 2-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — SWU Verkehr, part of the municipal services of Ulm and Neu-Ulm, has welcomed the delivery of the first two out of 14 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G buses, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility. These electric articulated buses, emission-free at the local level, were handed over on July 1, 2024, in a ceremony attended by Ulm Mayor Martin Ansbacher, Neu-Ulm Mayor Johannes Stingl, SWU Managing Director Klaus Eder, SWU Transport Managing Director Ralf Gummersbach, and Daimler Buses CEO Till Oberwörder.

Equipped with advanced NMC3 batteries offering nearly 50% more energy density, the 18.3-meter-long eCitaro G buses meet SWU Verkehr’s stringent criteria, including a minimum range of 150 kilometers and telemetrics-based vehicle diagnostic systems. These buses also feature innovative assistance systems such as Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, Preventive Brake Assist 2, and Traffic Sign Assist, ensuring enhanced safety for up to 143 passengers and other road users.

“The introduction of these Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G buses underscores SWU Verkehr’s commitment to climate-friendly mobility and safety,” remarked a spokesperson. The remaining 12 buses will be delivered by next year, reinforcing SWU Verkehr GmbH’s role in advancing sustainable transport solutions in Ulm and Neu-Ulm.

Founded in 1999, SWU Verkehr transports over 39 million passengers annually with a fleet of 69 buses covering 4.5 million kilometers across the region, supported by approximately 320 employees.

NMC3 batteries: nearly 50 percent more energy density

The 18.3-metre-long eCitaro G with four doors is equipped with a total of five NMC3 battery packs, promising 490 kWh of energy. The designation NMC3 stands for a generation of high-performance batteries (NMC: Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide). The battery charging options are also extremely flexible: the articulated buses can be charged not only in the bus depot using sockets on the left and right-hand side above the front axle, but also while traveling by using a pantograph on the bus roof. A special roof-mounted camera system enables the bus to approach the pantograph charging station with maximum precision. Known as opportunity charging, this is essential for handling Ulm’s demanding bus routes under all conditions.

Latest assistance systems increase active safety

The latest assistance systems from Daimler Buses ensure the safety of up to 143 passengers and other road users. With Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist and the active braking assistance Preventive Brake Assist 2, Mercedes-Benz protects vulnerable road users and thus helps to avoid accidents. Added to this is the innovative Traffic Sign Assist system. Thanks to GPS and camera support, it continuously compares the vehicle speed with the valid traffic rules and gives visual and audible feedback if the permitted speed is exceeded.

With the 14 new Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G buses, SWU Verkehr GmbH is not only driving into the future with absolute safety, but is fulfilling its responsibility for climate-friendly mobility.
