Stefan Mecha to Succeed Carsten Intra as Chairman of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Effective July 2025

(IN BRIEF) Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has appointed Stefan Mecha as the new Chairman of the Board of Management, effective July 1, 2025. Mecha succeeds Prof. Dr. Carsten Intra, who is retiring after leading the brand through a period of growth, including the launch of key models like the ID. Buzz. Mecha brings over 15 years of experience within the Volkswagen Group and is set to lead the brand to new heights, enhancing cooperation within the Brand Group Core.

(PRESS RELEASE) WOLFSBURG/HANOVER, 21-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWN) has announced that Stefan Mecha will assume the role of Chairman of the Board of Management of the brand, effective July 1, 2025. He will succeed Prof. Dr. Carsten Intra, who is leaving the company for personal reasons as part of a retirement plan.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Brand, Head of the Brand Group Core, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented, “Together with the team, Stefan Mecha will take the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand to the next level and further strengthen cooperation within the Brand Group Core. Prof. Dr. Carsten Intra, who has led the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand since September 1, 2020, will retire after spearheading a significant turnaround of the brand, which saw record earnings in 2023. During his tenure, Intra played a pivotal role in the development of key models like the ID. Buzz and Transporter, and made significant strides in autonomous driving technology. He also sharpened the brand’s profile with the introduction of the ‘California’ sub-brand. Thomas Schäfer added, “Carsten has set the right course for VWN’s future and contributed immensely to its strategic development. Stefan Mecha, currently Executive CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand for the China region, brings over 15 years of experience with the Volkswagen Group to his new role. Mecha has held various leadership positions in regions such as Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and China, where he demonstrated the ability to achieve sustainable success in challenging environments. Notably, his first position within the Volkswagen Group was in sales for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “Stefan’s deep market insight and pragmatic approach, combined with his team spirit, will be invaluable as he leads the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand forward,” said Thomas Schäfer.

Mecha’s career within the Volkswagen Group began in 2005 when he joined as Regional Sales Director for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Western Europe. He went on to hold various key sales and management roles in Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, and Brazil. In 2020, he was appointed General Director of Volkswagen Group Rus, and in 2022, became Executive CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars for the China region.
