Volkswagen Group Utilizes Real-World Data to Boost Traffic Safety with Enhanced Driver Assistance Systems

(IN BRIEF) Volkswagen Group is enhancing traffic safety by utilizing sensor and image data from customer vehicles to continuously improve driver assistance systems and automated driving features. This initiative, starting in Germany in late 2024 with select Volkswagen and Audi models, will use real-world traffic data to optimize safety features, delivering updates through software enhancements. The program will expand to other brands, and customers must provide consent for their data to be used. Data will be transferred only in specific scenarios, such as emergency braking, and will be securely managed to ensure privacy. The goal is to make driving more comfortable and safer for all road users, while ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.

(PRESS RELEASE) WOLFSBURG, 27-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen Group is ramping up efforts to improve road safety through the use of sensor and image data from customer vehicles. The data collected from real-world traffic situations will be used to refine driver assistance systems and automated driving features. These enhancements will be delivered to vehicles via software updates, benefiting drivers and increasing road safety for all. Starting in late 2024, the initiative will launch in Germany with select Volkswagen and Audi models, with other brands to follow. Customers must provide consent for their vehicle data to be used, ensuring that all data protection regulations are met.

By using real traffic data, Volkswagen aims to continually optimize the performance of its driver assistance systems, making them more precise, user-friendly, and responsive to everyday driving conditions. This initiative builds on the company’s current use of anonymized data from its fleet to create high-resolution maps and offer lane guidance and hazard alerts.

Data will only be transferred in specific scenarios, such as emergency braking or sudden evasive maneuvers, to ensure the most relevant and useful information is collected. The data, including camera images, environmental sensor readings, speed, and steering angles, will be securely transmitted via Volkswagen’s CARIAD cloud platform. The project will initially support models equipped with the E3 architecture, such as Volkswagen’s ID. family and Audi’s new Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron. Additional brands within the Group are expected to join in the future.

Customer privacy remains a priority, with data transfer only occurring with explicit consent, which can be revoked at any time. While the data may also involve pedestrians and cyclists, all information is handled in compliance with strict data protection laws, ensuring privacy for all road users.
