Siemens Mobility Drives Smart Rail Transformation in São Paulo with Comprehensive ATO over ETCS Solution

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility has signed a contract with Trivia Trens S.A. to implement a complete digital signaling solution featuring Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over ETCS Level 2 for São Paulo’s commuter lines 11-Coral, 12-Sapphire, and 13-Jade. Spanning 140 kilometers and 46 stations, it will be the largest ETCS Level 2 project in Latin America. The project includes equipping over 130 vehicles—including trains and locomotives—with Siemens’ Trainguard ETCS on-board systems. The solution integrates multiple subsystems such as Advanced Traffic Management, modern interlockings, Radio Block Centre, and trackside components, supported by a two-year warranty. ATO over ETCS enhances both safety and efficiency by automating train operations while maintaining continuous control. The new system will improve service reliability, increase capacity by up to 30%, reduce energy consumption, and lower maintenance needs, supporting São Paulo’s efforts toward smarter, more sustainable urban mobility.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 9-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ —  Siemens AG (ETR: SIE), a German multinational conglomerate and Europe’s largest industrial manufacturing company, announces that Siemens Mobility has been awarded a major contract by Trivia Trens S.A. to deliver a fully digital and automated signaling system incorporating Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over ETCS Level 2 for São Paulo’s commuter rail network. This extensive project spans 140 kilometers of track and 46 stations across three major lines—11-Coral, 12-Sapphire, and 13-Jade—marking the most comprehensive deployment of this technology in Latin America and the region’s largest ETCS Level 2 system.

As part of the agreement, Siemens Mobility will equip 107 passenger trains, six MRS locomotives, three TRIVIA locomotives, and 17 auxiliary “yellow fleet” vehicles with its advanced Trainguard ETCS (European Train Control System) on-board units. “This landmark project underscores our dedication to bringing world-class rail technology to Latin America,” stated Marc Ludwig, CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility. “By implementing ATO over ETCS Level 2 in São Paulo’s dynamic commuter network, we are establishing new benchmarks for automation and efficiency in urban rail transport, achieving up to a 30% increase in network capacity. Together with our partner, we are delivering the largest ETCS Level 2 project in South America.”

The scope of work includes the comprehensive design, supply, installation, commissioning, and assisted operation of the signaling system for the three lines. It will integrate a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATS), modern interlocking systems, Radio Block Centre (RBC), and complete trackside equipment. Siemens Mobility will also provide a two-year warranty and spare parts support, ensuring operational reliability and continuity.

The combination of ATO and ETCS Level 2 represents the forefront of digital rail automation, merging two sophisticated systems to enhance safety, efficiency, and performance. ETCS Level 2 provides continuous, secure supervision of train operations through TETRA communication, while ATO automates key driving functions up to Grade of Automation (GoA) Level 2. This integration ensures precise train movements, optimized acceleration and braking, and accurate platform stopping, improving overall headway management and passenger experience.

The implementation of this state-of-the-art signaling system is expected to revolutionize São Paulo’s commuter rail operations by enhancing service reliability, increasing train frequency, and improving energy efficiency. The optimized control algorithms will reduce energy use and peak power demand, while the simplified system architecture minimizes maintenance needs. With its scalable design and reduced reliance on trackside components, the new digital signaling solution is positioned as a sustainable, future-proof investment in São Paulo’s growing public transport infrastructure.
