Saab Secures SEK 540 Million Contract from NATO Support and Procurement Agency to Upgrade Spain’s Arthur Radar Systems

(IN BRIEF) Saab has been awarded a SEK 540 million (EUR 49.4 million) contract by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency to extend the service life of the Spanish Army’s Arthur radar systems. The modernization will upgrade the systems with digital technologies, improving target detection range, operational mobility, and precision while minimizing electronic exposure. The project will sustain Spain’s critical artillery locating capabilities and represents Saab’s first radar order processed through NATO’s procurement organization. Saab executive Carl-Johan Bergholm emphasized the system’s role in early fire warning and rapid counter-battery operations, underscoring its importance for both military effectiveness and troop protection.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 20-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Saab has announced the receipt of an order from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to extend the operational lifetime of the Spanish Army’s Arthur radar systems. The contract, valued at approximately SEK 540 million (EUR 49.4 million), will modernize the systems with advanced technologies, ensuring that Spain’s artillery locating capabilities remain highly effective and cost-efficient for years to come.

The upgrade program will enhance the radar system’s precision, mobility, and survivability, strengthening Spain’s ability to detect, track, and respond to incoming artillery fire. Through digital modernization, the improved Arthur systems will identify more targets at extended ranges while maintaining a lower electronic signature—enabling greater tactical flexibility and resilience in complex combat environments.

“We are pleased to continue to strengthen Spain’s artillery locating capability, which is critical in warning of incoming fire as well as enabling quick counter-battery fire,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s Business Area Surveillance. “This order marks an important milestone for Saab, as it is the first time one of our radar systems has been procured through NATO’s purchasing organisation, further solidifying our relationship with both NATO and allied forces.”

Arthur, Saab’s combat-proven artillery locating radar, plays a vital role in protecting military personnel and civilian populations by providing early warnings of hostile fire and supporting rapid counter-battery operations. Designed for modern warfare, it combines high mobility with advanced digitalization to deliver accurate situational awareness across diverse operational environments.

This latest collaboration reinforces Saab’s reputation as a trusted defense partner in Europe and underscores its commitment to supporting NATO member states in enhancing their national defense and collective security capabilities.
