Oman’s Sanvira Tech Inks Deal to Supply Carbon Anodes to Hydro’s Norwegian Smelters

(IN BRIEF) Hydro, a global aluminium producer, has signed a significant agreement with Sanvira Tech LLC to secure a stable supply of carbon anodes from Oman for its Norwegian aluminium smelters. The contract spans eight years with extension options and will cover up to 25% of Hydro’s annual carbon anode requirements. Sanvira is building a new anode plant in Oman, set for completion in Q1 2025, after which it will undergo qualification and performance testing for Hydro’s needs. This collaboration ensures a reliable source of essential raw materials for Hydro’s aluminium production.

(PRESS RELEASE) OSLO, 27-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  Norsk Hydro ASA (OTCMKTS: NHYDY), a Norwegian aluminium and renewable energy company committed to a sustainable future, announces that it has inked a pivotal agreement with Sanvira Tech LLC, solidifying the supply of carbon anodes from Oman to Hydro’s aluminium smelters in Norway.

With a steadfast commitment to securing stable and diversified sources of high-quality carbon anodes, Hydro views this collaboration as a strategic move to ensure the uninterrupted production of essential aluminium materials. Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President for Hydro Aluminium Metal, expressed his confidence in Sanvira’s capacity to serve as a dependable, resilient, and cost-efficient long-term supplier of this vital raw material. “Hydro fully depends on stable and diversified supplies of high quality carbon anodes to make a material that the world needs. We are confident that Sanvira will be a robust, resilient and cost efficient long-term source of an essential raw material for Hydro’s aluminium smelters.”

The agreement outlines an initial offtake period spanning eight years, with provisions for potential extensions. This partnership will encompass up to 25 percent of the annual carbon anode requirements for Hydro’s Norwegian smelters, which collectively consume approximately 600,000 tonnes of these critical components.

Sanvira’s forthcoming anode production facility in Oman, currently under construction, is poised to play a central role in this supply chain. With an expected completion date in the first quarter of 2025, the plant will subsequently undergo a rigorous qualification and performance testing phase, ensuring it meets Hydro’s stringent quality standards, beginning in the second quarter of 2025.
