Intesa Sanpaolo Strengthens Strategic Role in Financing UK Infrastructure and Energy Transition

(IN BRIEF) Intesa Sanpaolo, through its IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, is strengthening its role as a strategic partner for UK infrastructure by supporting major projects across energy, construction, ports, and the energy transition. Recent financings for National Grid and National Gas underline the bank’s commitment to energy security and modernisation, while wider involvement in construction, ports, and carbon capture projects reflects a long-term approach to sustainable growth. By combining financial expertise with international reach, Intesa Sanpaolo continues to support the development of resilient and future-ready infrastructure across the UK.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 26-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Intesa Sanpaolo is reinforcing its position as a strategic financial partner for infrastructure development in the United Kingdom through its IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, supporting the country’s priorities around energy security, ecological transition, and long-term industrial growth. Led by Mauro Micillo, the Division continues to expand its role in financing complex and large-scale infrastructure projects across key UK sectors.

As part of this commitment, the IMI CIB Division has recently completed two major financing transactions in the UK energy grid sector with a combined value of approximately €500 million (£400 million). These include a facility of around €290 million (£250 million) for National Grid and a further €170 million (£150 million) facility for National Gas. Both companies are central to the UK’s energy system, ensuring the reliable transmission of electricity and gas while enabling the integration of renewable energy sources and low-emissions technologies.

National Grid owns and operates the electricity transmission network in England and Wales and manages distribution networks across the South West, Midlands, and Wales, connecting millions of users to daily electricity supply. National Gas operates the national gas transmission network, playing a critical role in maintaining system reliability and supporting the modernisation required to meet future energy demands. Significant and sustained investment is required to upgrade and expand these infrastructures, reflecting their strategic importance to the UK economy.

Beyond the energy grid, Intesa Sanpaolo has progressively strengthened its footprint across the wider UK infrastructure landscape. Through its IMI CIB Division, the Group has supported numerous transactions in construction, ports, energy transition, transport, and other strategic sectors. In the construction sector alone, the Division has participated in financing operations totalling approximately €960 million (£830 million) for leading UK groups such as Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, and Morgan Sindall.

In the ports sector, IMI CIB has provided bilateral financing of €58 million (£50 million) to Associated British Ports and participated, alongside other international banks, in a €240 million (£210 million) financing for Peel Ports Group. In the energy transition space, the Division acted as Mandated Lead Arranger, together with a consortium of international banks, for the Liverpool Bay CO₂ Transportation and Storage project, a €2.9 billion (£2.5 billion) financing that forms a key part of the UK’s net-zero strategy through hydrogen production and carbon capture infrastructure.

IMI CIB’s activities also extend to social infrastructure, sustainable mobility, digital and industrial infrastructure, and airport development. Through an integrated and long-term approach, Intesa Sanpaolo continues to provide specialist expertise, sophisticated structuring capabilities, and access to a strong international banking network, supporting the delivery of resilient, competitive, and low-emissions infrastructure across the UK.
