Eckerö Line Becomes Finland’s First Maritime Operator to Use Neste’s Renewable Diesel

(IN BRIEF) Eckerö Line has become the first Finnish maritime company to use Neste MY Renewable Diesel in commercial operations, helping it meet the 2% emissions reduction target of the 2025 FuelEU Maritime regulation. The renewable diesel, produced from 100% waste and residue materials, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% over its lifecycle. As it requires no changes to existing ships or fuel infrastructure, it offers a practical solution for decarbonising shipping.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 24-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Neste and Finnish ferry operator Eckerö Line are strengthening their partnership in a bid to reduce carbon emissions from maritime transport. As the first Finnish company to adopt Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ for commercial sea travel, Eckerö Line is taking active steps to comply with the new FuelEU Maritime regulation, which took effect at the start of 2025 and mandates a 2% emissions reduction in shipping fuel.

Operating passenger and freight services between Helsinki and Tallinn, Eckerö Line has begun blending Neste’s renewable diesel into its existing fuel supply. This bio-based diesel—produced entirely from waste and residue raw materials—can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% across its life cycle compared to traditional fossil diesel.

“Our vessels operate daily in the Gulf of Finland, and Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a practical solution for reducing emissions right now,” said Taru Keronen, CEO of Eckerö Line. “It integrates seamlessly with our current fleet and infrastructure, helping us meet our climate goals without needing major modifications.”

One of the advantages of Neste’s renewable diesel is its compatibility with existing diesel engines and distribution systems, meaning operators can reduce their environmental footprint without costly upgrades.

“The urgency of climate action continues to grow,” added Joni Pihlström, Vice President of Marketing & Services at Neste. “We’re proud to collaborate with Eckerö Line, a pioneer in sustainable maritime transport, and to support the shipping industry’s transition toward cleaner energy.”

Neste MY Renewable Diesel is tailored to meet the specific emissions reporting methodologies used in different regions, including the EU RED II directive and the US LCFS program.
