Continental Otrokovice Factory Achieves ISCC PLUS Certification to Fuel 40 Percent Sustainable Tire Materials by 2030

Continental tire plant in Otrokovice receives internationally recognized ISCC PLUS sustainability certification

(IN BRIEF) Continental’s Otrokovice tire plant has been awarded ISCC PLUS certification, confirming its adherence to strict documentation and traceability standards for renewable and recycled raw materials. This site now joins five other Continental factories worldwide in meeting these globally recognized sustainability criteria. The certification hinges on a mass-balance approach, which tracks the proportion of sustainable inputs in the production process, enabling Continental to steadily increase eco-friendly content in its tires. Company leaders Dr. Tomáš Belza and Jorge Almeida emphasize this milestone as part of the broader goal to reach over 40 percent renewable and recycled materials by 2030. ISCC PLUS, established in 2010, promotes climate-friendly, deforestation-free supply chains across various material categories. With over 5,400 employees, the Otrokovice plant can produce 19 million passenger-car and one million truck and industrial tires annually, contributing significantly to Continental’s sustainability roadmap.

(PRESS RELEASE) HANOVER, 17-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Continental’s Otrokovice tire factory in the Czech Republic has just achieved ISCC PLUS certification, an internationally respected sustainability standard that validates both the use and complete traceability of renewable and recycled raw materials. This endorsement confirms that Continental rigorously documents every step of its supply chain, guaranteeing that bio-based inputs and reclaimed components are transparently tracked from origin to finished product.

The Otrokovice site joins five other Continental production facilities—Lousado (Portugal), Hefei (China), Púchov (Slovakia), Korbach (Germany) and Sarreguemines (France)—in holding ISCC PLUS status. Together, these certified factories support the company’s ambitious target of incorporating over 40 percent renewable and recycled content in its tire portfolio by 2030.

Central to this achievement is the mass-balance methodology, which blends fossil-based, renewable and recycled materials within existing manufacturing systems. By meticulously measuring the volumes introduced at each stage, Continental can apportion certified sustainable inputs accurately across its output. This approach not only strengthens supply-chain integrity but also allows the gradual escalation of environmentally friendly materials in every tire.

“Reaching the ISCC PLUS milestone at Otrokovice is a testament to our unwavering dedication to sustainability,” said Dr. Tomáš Belza, plant manager in Otrokovice. “Being one of six certified Continental sites highlights the strides we’ve made in greening our operations and our entire value chain.”

Jorge Almeida, Head of Sustainability for Continental Tires, added, “Our roadmap to 40 percent renewable and recycled materials by 2030 relies on mass-balanced sourcing. This system empowers us to transparently boost the proportion of sustainable inputs step by step.”

Established in 2010, the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme champions deforestation-free, climate-friendly supply chains. Its standards cover agricultural biomass, biogenic residues, non-biological renewables and recycled carbon materials. By embracing ISCC-certified bio-based rubbers and circular-process carbon black, Continental is reinforcing its commitment to combat climate change and elevate traceability across global markets.

The Otrokovice facility stands as one of Continental’s largest tire plants, employing more than 5,400 people and capable of manufacturing up to 19 million passenger-car tires and over one million truck and industrial tires each year. Its diverse output includes flagship Continental tires alongside other premium lines within the company’s brand portfolio.
