Connected Cities Initiative Leads to 11 Million Euro MaaS Contract for Indra

(IN BRIEF) Indra, a technology engineering company, has been chosen to develop a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform for six Spanish cities: Valencia, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Gijón, Logroño, and Fuenlabrada. The platform will integrate all public and private transport services into one app for citizens to plan and pay for their travels. The 11 million euro contract was awarded as part of the Connected Cities initiative, aimed at digitizing and transforming urban transport in Spain. The platform is expected to be operational by the end of 2024 and will promote the use of public transport and implement Low Emission Zones.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 9-Feb-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Indra (BME: IDR), a world-leader in providing proprietary solutions in Transport, Air Traffic and Defence markets, announces that has been chosen to develop and implement the first-ever Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform in six Spanish cities: Valencia, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Gijón, Logroño, and Fuenlabrada. The platform will bring all public and private transport services into one convenient app, allowing citizens to plan and pay for their travels with ease.

The contract, worth over 11 million euros, was awarded by the Municipal Transport Company of Valencia as part of the Connected Cities initiative, an effort to digitize and sustainably transform urban transport across Spain. The platform will be operational by the end of 2024.

The Connected Cities initiative is an open program, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Mobility and Urban Agenda, that other cities can participate in. The goal is to create a national, multi-city platform that can be tailored to the specific needs of each municipality.

With this MaaS platform, Indra will not only digitize the transport sector, but also create a new, integrated and sustainable urban mobility model in Spain. This will improve trip planning, promote the use of public transport, and implement Low Emission Zones (LEZs) by providing information and managing access permits.

The platform will also foster cooperation among different authorities and public and private operators, resulting in technological solutions with a common standard. This will allow for the integration of data, comparison and analysis of similar cities, and shared expenditure on development.

“We’re truly excited about this highly transformational project for the six connected cities, with technology acting as an accelerator for the digitalization of all their transport systems, thus helping them develop more accessible mobility that’s more connected with their citizens, more environment-friendly and more efficient for the authorities and transport operators. Equally relevant and innovative in this project is the cooperation between all the transport stakeholders, public authorities and operators, with a platform for six cities in six different autonomous regions, permitting the integration and sharing of all the data to secure a true multi-modal combination of transport systems. The multi-modal nature is the essential foundation behind the new mobility models society demands, one where Indra’s knowledge, experience and references can really make a distinctive contribution in terms of value”, explains Berta Barrero, the managing director of Indra’s Mobility business.

The implementation of Indra’s Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform is set to bring a host of benefits for city governments, citizens, and transport operators. The platform, which integrates and analyzes transport data in real time, will provide city governments with valuable insights into mobility governance and planning. For citizens, the platform will offer a comprehensive transport solution with all information integrated into a single MaaS app, allowing them to plan their trips with ease and access different transport services and Low Emission Zones across participating cities. Transport operators will also benefit from a digital point of contact with users and access to real-time data, helping them to adjust their supply to demand, have unified rates, and centralized post-paid management. The development phase of the platform is set to launch soon.

Indra to Develop App for All Means of Transport in Spanish Cities

Leading global technology engineering company, Indra, has been contracted to develop a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform for the integration of all public and private transport services in the Spanish cities of Valencia, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Gijón, Logroño, and Fuenlabrada. The platform, which is part of the Connected Cities initiative, will allow citizens to plan their trips, access all modes of transport, and pay for travel via a single app.

Indra’s technology will provide the platform’s backbone and integration for traditional transport services and will be accessible through smartphones, tablets, and PCs. The app will include information on traffic conditions, authorization to access low emission zones, car-sharing, and parking payment. The platform will also offer gamification elements to enhance the user experience and promote environmentally friendly modes of transport.

The implementation of the MaaS platform is expected to encourage citizens to use public transport instead of private vehicles, reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and decreasing accident rates. The platform will also allow for centralized post-payment and the best rates adjusted to the full journey. Indra has a proven track record in the transport industry, with over 2,500 mobility projects completed globally.
