ANDRITZ wins major contract to upgrade Formin hydropower plant for Dravske elektrarne Maribor in Slovenia

Contract signing Formin Rehabilitation project

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has secured a high double-digit million-euro contract from Dravske elektrarne Maribor (DEM) to modernize the Formin hydropower plant in Slovenia. The project involves supplying new turbines, generators, and electromechanical equipment, raising the plant’s capacity from 116 MW to 130 MW. The refurbishment is central to DEM’s strategy to increase efficiency and sustainability, with its hydropower fleet already providing nearly 25% of Slovenia’s electricity. This first major partnership between ANDRITZ and DEM underscores ANDRITZ’s leadership in European hydropower rehabilitation.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 23-Seo-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — International technology group ANDRITZ has been awarded a significant contract by Dravske elektrarne Maribor d.o.o. (DEM), Slovenia’s largest renewable energy producer, to carry out the complete refurbishment and modernization of the Formin hydropower plant. The order, valued in the high double-digit million-euro range, will be included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the third quarter of 2025.

Commissioned more than 45 years ago, the Formin run-of-river facility currently has an installed capacity of 116 MW. Following the upgrade, its total capacity will rise to 130 MW, enhancing operational efficiency and extending the plant’s performance well into the future.

Under the agreement, ANDRITZ will provide two new turbines and generators, together with a comprehensive package of electromechanical equipment and auxiliaries. The scope covers design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning of the uprated units, with production supported by ANDRITZ’s state-of-the-art facilities in Austria and its global hydropower network.

With nearly 600 MW of total installed capacity and annual generation of around 2,800 GWh, DEM’s hydropower fleet supplies almost a quarter of Slovenia’s electricity. The modernization of Formin is a key element of DEM’s long-term sustainability and efficiency strategy, ensuring reliable renewable output to meet the country’s growing energy needs.

This marks the first major collaboration between DEM and ANDRITZ, further reinforcing ANDRITZ’s position as a leading provider of hydropower rehabilitation projects across Europe. By delivering modernization solutions that enhance reliability and output, ANDRITZ is supporting utilities in their efforts to drive the clean energy transition.
