New Skanska project in Georgia highlights continued expansion of large scale data center construction

(IN BRIEF) Skanska has signed a USD 75 million contract to build a 22,700 square metre data center in Georgia, USA. The project includes construction of the main facility, site work, utilities, and the fitout of administration areas and five data halls. With construction already underway and completion expected in early 2028, the development reflects growing demand for digital infrastructure and reinforces Skanska’s role in delivering large-scale data center projects.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 9-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has secured a new contract in the United States to deliver a large-scale data center project in Georgia, further strengthening its presence in the fast-growing digital infrastructure sector. The agreement, valued at USD 75 million (approximately SEK 690 million), will be recorded in the company’s U.S. order intake for the first quarter of 2026.

The project involves the construction of a 22,700 square metre data center facility, reflecting continued demand for high-capacity digital infrastructure driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data-intensive services. In addition to the core building, Skanska’s scope includes extensive site development works, underground utility installation, and the internal fitout of both operational and administrative spaces.

A key component of the development is the creation of five dedicated data halls, which will house the critical IT infrastructure required to support large-scale data processing and storage. The inclusion of administration areas within the project also highlights the need for integrated operational environments that support both technical and managerial functions on-site.

Construction on the facility began in March 2026 and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2028. Over this period, the project will contribute to expanding regional data capacity while supporting the infrastructure required for digital services across industries.

The contract underscores the increasing importance of data centers as foundational assets in the modern economy. As organisations continue to scale their digital operations and adopt advanced technologies, demand for secure, efficient, and scalable data infrastructure is accelerating. Projects like this play a crucial role in enabling that growth while supporting broader economic and technological development.

For Skanska, the award highlights its continued involvement in complex, high-value construction projects in North America, particularly within sectors tied to long-term structural growth such as digital infrastructure. The company’s ability to deliver both the physical construction and technical requirements of such facilities positions it to capitalise on ongoing investment in data-driven industries.
