Port of A Coruña to become key logistics hub with Exolum’s planned bulk liquid terminal for green fuels and hydrocarbons

(IN BRIEF) Exolum has launched the authorisation process to build a new €100 million bulk liquid storage terminal at the Outer Port of A Coruña, designed as a flexible and sustainable energy transition hub. The phased project will provide 165,000 m³ of capacity across 22 tanks capable of storing petroleum products, biofuels, renewable ammonia, CO₂, and green methanol, supported by rail, maritime, and road links. Expected to begin operations in 2029, the terminal will boost efficiency and energy security in Galicia and northwestern Iberia while positioning the port as a leading logistics hub in Europe. Exolum highlights the project’s potential to generate qualified jobs, enhance regional competitiveness, and attract industrial investment tied to decarbonisation and green fuels.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 26-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Exolum has initiated the authorisation process for the construction of a new bulk liquid storage terminal at the Outer Port of A Coruña, located at Punta Langosteira dock. With an investment exceeding €100 million, the project represents a major step in the company’s strategy to drive the energy transition in Spain and Europe by developing infrastructure adapted to both traditional energy products and emerging sustainable fuels.

The proposed terminal, designed as a flexible and future-proof energy hub, will have a total capacity of around 165,000 m³ distributed across 22 tanks (atmospheric, cryogenic, and pressurised). It will be equipped to handle a wide variety of products, from petroleum and chemicals to renewable ammonia, captured CO₂, green methanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and biofuels such as biodiesel, HVO, and bioethanol. The design prioritises safety, energy efficiency, automation, and environmental sustainability.

A multimodal logistics approach is central to the project. The terminal would feature an Iberian-gauge railway loading bay directly connected to Spain’s national network, high-capacity pipelines linking to two port berths for maritime traffic, and dedicated tanker truck loading islands. This integrated system is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and security of regional logistics, ensuring a stable energy supply for Galicia and the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

The infrastructure also includes plans for the reception, storage, blending, and distribution of a diverse range of products. For cryogenic CO₂, the project envisions pressurised and refrigerated storage with dispatch options by road, sea, and potentially a future pipeline. Ammonia storage and distribution are also under study, including options for cryogenic reception and multi-modal onward transport.

Given the complexity and scale of the development, implementation will be phased, with initial operations scheduled to commence in 2029. Once operational, the terminal is expected to transform the Port of A Coruña into a key logistics hub for Spain and Europe, benefiting from its prime location on maritime routes to Northern Europe, America, southern Europe, and the Middle East.

Jorge Guillén, Aviation & Spain Network Lead at Exolum, stated: “This project demonstrates Exolum’s strong commitment to building new logistics infrastructure to address the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition. The Outer Port of A Coruña offers optimal conditions, including strategic maritime access and multimodal connections, making it the perfect location for an initiative of this scale.”

Exolum anticipates that the terminal will not only strengthen industrial competitiveness and regional supply chains but also stimulate economic development in Galicia. The project is expected to generate skilled employment during both construction and operational phases, while attracting further investment linked to decarbonisation and green energy solutions. With this initiative, Exolum underlines its dedication to sustainability, innovation, and the creation of advanced logistics solutions aligned with Europe’s energy transition goals.
