Coralius marks 1,000th bunkering as Gasum expands LNG and bio-LNG operations in maritime sector

(IN BRIEF) Gasum’s LNG bunkering vessel Coralius has marked its 1,000th operation with a delivery to the MSC Euribia at the Port of Kiel, Germany, after supplying over 270,000 metric tons of LNG since 2017. Originally the first vessel purpose-built for LNG bunkering, Coralius is owned by Anthony Veder and Sirius Shipping and chartered by Gasum. The vessel, which runs on LNG, will transition entirely to bio-LNG in August 2025, enabling significant emissions savings and FuelEU Maritime over-compliance benefits for shipowners. With bio-LNG offering up to 90% lower lifecycle emissions compared to conventional marine fuels, Gasum expects growing demand as regulations tighten. To support future needs, Gasum has chartered a new vessel, Celsius, set to begin operations in 2027 with enhanced efficiency and capacity, further boosting bio-LNG availability for maritime customers.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 25-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum’s dedicated bunkering vessel Coralius has reached a major milestone after completing its 1,000th successful operation on 23 August at the Port of Kiel in Germany, where it supplied LNG to the cruise ship MSC Euribia. Since entering service in 2017, Coralius has safely delivered more than 270,000 metric tons of liquefied natural gas to a diverse fleet ranging from large cruise ships to smaller vessels.

Built as the first purpose-designed LNG bunker vessel of its kind, Coralius is owned by Anthony Veder and Sirius Shipping and has been operated by Gasum on charter. With an Ice Class 1A hull and engines powered by LNG, the vessel was engineered to discharge large volumes of LNG in a secure and efficient manner, setting new standards in maritime bunkering when it was commissioned eight years ago.

Looking ahead, Gasum announced that from August 2025, Coralius will transition fully to running on bio-LNG, further strengthening its sustainability profile. The switch will generate FuelEU Maritime over-compliance, which Gasum will make available to shipowners through its pooling service. LNG and bio-LNG remain the most practical low-emission alternatives currently available to the maritime sector, with renewable bio-LNG offering life-cycle emissions reductions of up to 90 percent compared with conventional marine fuels.

The company is also preparing for growing demand driven by stricter emissions regulations and customer requirements. To enhance supply capacity, Gasum has chartered a new LNG and bio-LNG bunkering vessel named Celsius, which will enter service in 2027. Celsius will feature improved fuel efficiency, advanced tank insulation, and a larger cargo capacity, supporting Gasum’s long-term commitment to expanding the availability of low-carbon marine fuels.

By continuing to invest in bio-LNG supply and bunkering infrastructure, Gasum underscores its ambition to accelerate the maritime industry’s transition toward cleaner fuels and reduced emissions.
