Gasum Reinforces Energy Transition Strategy With Long-Term Capacity Reservation at Lithuania’s Klaipeda LNG Terminal

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has secured long-term capacity at the Klaipeda LNG terminal in Lithuania for the 2033–2040 period, strengthening its ability to supply LNG and bio-LNG to customers across Northwestern Europe. The agreement supports the company’s long-term energy transition strategy by giving it additional flexibility to manage deliveries across its LNG terminal network in Finland, Sweden and Norway, while also serving maritime customers in and around the Danish straits. Klaipeda already forms part of Gasum’s supply chain as a reloading point for carrier and bunker vessels and as support for natural gas operations in Finland and the Baltic countries. Gasum expects LNG demand to increase, especially in the maritime sector, as more LNG-powered vessels enter service and shipping companies respond to emissions reduction targets from the IMO, the EU and their customers. The capacity may also support bio-LNG supply through virtual liquefaction of pipeline-fed biomethane using mass balancing and biomethane certificates, helping customers further reduce lifecycle fuel emissions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 10-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum has reserved long-term capacity at the Klaipeda LNG terminal in Lithuania for the period from 2033 to 2040, strengthening its ability to supply liquefied natural gas and liquefied biomethane to customers across Northwestern Europe.

The agreement supports Gasum’s wider strategic ambition to remain a reliable energy transition partner while giving the company greater long-term flexibility in managing LNG and bio-LNG deliveries across its network. The Klaipeda terminal has already formed part of Gasum’s supply chain, serving both as a reloading point for the company’s carrier and bunker vessels and as support for its natural gas operations in Finland and the Baltic countries.

Klaipeda’s location is well aligned with Gasum’s existing LNG terminal network in Finland, Sweden and Norway. The reserved capacity will help the company optimise flows between these terminals and serve maritime customers directly in and around the Danish straits.

Gasum expects demand for LNG to grow, particularly in the maritime sector, as the number of LNG-powered vessels is projected to rise in the coming years. The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to move toward lower-emission fuels as regulatory requirements and customer expectations continue to evolve.

The International Maritime Organization and the European Union have set goals and targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport. At the same time, customers are increasingly seeking more sustainable transport options to support their own emissions reduction objectives.

Gasum also sees the Klaipeda capacity as relevant to the future supply of bio-LNG. The terminal capacity can be used for virtual liquefaction of pipeline-fed biomethane into bio-LNG through mass balancing and biomethane certificates. This capability is expected to become increasingly important as more customers look for ways to reduce lifecycle fuel emissions beyond what LNG alone can deliver.

By securing long-term access at Klaipeda, Gasum is reinforcing its role in the Nordic and Baltic LNG supply chain while positioning itself to support both current LNG demand and the growing market for renewable gas solutions in maritime and industrial transport.
