University of Tübingen hosts the 8th Taiwan Documentary Film Festival

Entertainment and discussions about Taiwanese society with director Tsai Tsung-Lung

27-6-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — The University of Tübingen is hosting the 8th Taiwan Documentary Film Festival over the next two days. Movies by Taiwanese directors will be shown on Friday, 28 and Saturday, 29 June in lecture theater 036 in the Neuphilologikum (Wilhelmstr 50). The documentaries are in the original Chinese with English subtitles. In keeping with the tradition of the Festival, the focus is on minorities and marginalized characters. The Festival is organized by the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT), a joint project of the University of Tübingen and the Taiwanese Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation.

The Festival opens Friday at 2:30pm with “The Other Side,” directed by Tsai Tsung-Lung. The movie takes a sensitive look at Chinese brides in Taiwan and Taiwanese businessmen in mainland China – and how private lives can be influenced by politics. It is followed by “Formosa Homicide Chronicle.” The director will be on hand for a discussion of his work. In addition to filmmaking, Tsai Tsung-Lung teaches at the Chung Cheng University in Taipei. For those seeking more action, break dance heroes take on the baddies in the feature movie “Chocolate Rap” at 6pm on Friday.

Saturday’s viewing kicks off at 10am with “Out/Marriage,” by Nguyen Kim-Hong, a film dealing with contemporary “bartered brides,” followed by “Tuvalu/Taivalu,” directed by Huang Hsin-Yao, which looks at the trouble caused by typhoons. This is followed by Tsai Tsung-Lung’s “Surviving Evil.”

All events are free of charge. Attendees may sample culinary specialties from Taiwan.
