Stadler wins €94 million follow-up order from Stockholm Transport to expand Roslagsbanan fleet

(IN BRIEF) Stadler has secured a new order from Stockholm Transport (SL) for ten additional X15p electric multiple units worth 94 million Swiss francs, expanding the fleet on the Roslagsbanan railway. The narrow-gauge line, connecting Stockholm’s northeastern suburbs to the city, requires specially designed trains, an area where Stadler has extensive expertise. The order, placed on 13 August 2025, will replace ageing 30-year-old trains, with delivery beginning in 2027 and service launch in 2028. Each new train will seat 150 passengers, carry around 300 in total, and provide step-free accessibility with space for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The contract includes an option for up to 31 additional vehicles. With this deal, Stadler continues strengthening its presence in Scandinavia, where it has secured major recent contracts in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 25-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler has received a new order from Stockholm Transport (SL) for ten additional electric multiple units, worth 94 million Swiss francs, to expand the fleet serving the Roslagsbanan railway. This unique 65-kilometre narrow-gauge line, with a track width of just 891 millimeters, connects the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm with the city centre and requires specially designed rolling stock — a proven area of expertise for Stadler.

The X15p trains, first introduced to the network in 2023, have already demonstrated high reliability and resilience under Sweden’s challenging weather conditions. With the new order placed on 13 August 2025, SL will further modernise its fleet by replacing 30-year-old trains from another manufacturer. Each new unit will carry approximately 300 passengers, including 150 seated, and is designed to be fully accessible, with barrier-free layouts and dedicated space for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Deliveries will begin in stages from 2027, with the new trains expected to enter service in 2028. Production will take place at Stadler’s Bussnang facility in Thurgau, Switzerland. The contract also includes an option for up to 31 additional vehicles.

“This follow-up order confirms our expertise in delivering tailor-made solutions under demanding conditions. We are proud to expand our presence in Scandinavia and to continue supporting SL in modernising Roslagsbanan with state-of-the-art rolling stock,” said Christian König, Deputy Head of Marketing and Sales at Stadler.

The decision reflects SL’s continued commitment to reliable, comfortable, and sustainable mobility. “Our modern X15p trains from Stadler have increased comfort for our passengers and enabled better service. With this follow-up order, we are reaffirming our commitment to provide reliable, comfortable, and sustainable public transport for the Stockholm region,” added Annika Bergström, Head of Projects for the development of Roslagsbanan.

Stadler’s footprint in Scandinavia has been growing steadily. In Sweden, the company recently secured an order from AB Transitio for 13 KISS double-decker trains, while seven FLIRT units are due to enter service on the Arlanda Express between Stockholm and the airport in 2029. In Norway, Stadler is delivering 17 long-distance trains for Norske Tog, with an option for up to 100. In Finland, VR Group has expanded its fleet with 20 additional FLIRT trains, and in Denmark, Stadler is supplying 24 battery-powered trains to Lokaltog, a pioneering step toward low-carbon rail transport.

Through this latest agreement with SL, Stadler reinforces its position as a trusted partner in Scandinavia, offering innovative, custom-built solutions that combine passenger comfort, accessibility, and environmental performance.
