RWE strengthens renewable energy presence in Germany with completion of Kail wind farm near the Moselle plateau

(IN BRIEF) RWE has commissioned its first wind farm in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Kail wind farm, located on the Moselle plateau near Koblenz. The three turbines, with a total capacity of 12.9 MW, will generate enough renewable power for 7,500 households annually. Completed within 12 months, the project emphasizes local collaboration, environmental responsibility, and community benefit, contributing €0.002 per kilowatt hour to nearby municipalities. The site was developed with care for archaeological preservation and community engagement. The Kail wind farm strengthens RWE’s expanding portfolio of onshore renewable energy projects in Germany, which now exceeds 737 MW in operation and 150 MW under construction.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 8-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has successfully completed and commissioned its first wind farm in Rhineland-Palatinate, marking another step forward in the company’s expansion of renewable energy across Germany. Located on the Moselle plateau near Kail, around 50 kilometers southwest of Koblenz, the new Kail wind farm consists of three state-of-the-art turbines with a combined capacity of 12.9 megawatts (MW) — enough to supply approximately 7,500 households with clean electricity each year.

RWE secured the project in the February 2024 onshore wind auction and completed construction in just 12 months, demonstrating strong project execution and collaboration between local authorities, contractors, and landowners.

Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, expressed gratitude to all those involved:

“Thanks to the excellent cooperation between our partners, local authorities, and the farmers who provided their land, we were able to complete our first wind farm in Rhineland-Palatinate efficiently and responsibly. Beyond supporting Germany’s renewable energy goals, the project also generates tangible benefits for the local community. For every kilowatt hour of electricity produced, we contribute 0.2 cents to neighboring municipalities — providing up to €60,000 in annual income.”

Environmental responsibility was a key focus throughout construction. RWE ensured that materials used for access roads and crane platforms were recycled and reused on-site. Special measures were also taken to protect nearby archaeological sites, which include burial mound fields and Roman-era settlements. Archaeologists from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate carefully examined and documented findings prior to the start of construction. The project also sparked community interest, with local school and kindergarten groups visiting the site to learn about renewable energy and sustainability.

The Kail project reinforces RWE’s commitment to domestic green energy growth. The company is currently building additional onshore wind farms across Germany with a combined planned capacity of 150 MW, supplementing the 737 MW already in operation. With its headquarters in Essen and nine regional offices, RWE continues to expand its role as one of Germany’s leading renewable energy developers, driving the transition to a sustainable energy future.
