(IN BRIEF) RWE has secured three new Agri-PV projects under Italy’s PNRR program, adding 30.2 MWac of solar capacity across Campania, Sicily, and Calabria. The projects will feature elevated solar structures designed to accommodate agricultural use—either crops or grazing—beneath the panels, helping improve land efficiency and agricultural resilience. Construction begins in the coming weeks, with commissioning slated for 2026. This expansion builds on RWE’s existing portfolio of renewable assets in Italy, including 598 MW in wind power and two additional Agri-PV projects already under construction from last year’s auction. RWE aims to support Italy’s leadership in advanced agrivoltaics while optimizing land use for both energy generation and food production.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN / ROME, 17-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has strengthened its foothold in Italy’s renewable energy landscape after winning contracts for three advanced agrivoltaic (Agri-PV) projects through the latest Italian Resilience and Recovery Plan (PNRR) auction. With a combined capacity of 30.2 MWac and nearly 47,000 solar modules to be installed, these projects in Campania, Sicily, and Calabria underscore Italy’s push toward sustainable land use that supports both agricultural production and solar power generation.

The awarded sites – Acquafredda 2 (11.7 MWac), Enna Piscopo (9.5 MWac), and Cave (9 MWac) – will employ elevated mounting structures allowing for the coexistence of solar energy production and agricultural activities such as crop harvesting and sheep grazing. Two of the sites will feature movable-axis tracker technology, enhancing efficiency and adaptability, while the third employs high fixed-tilt structures optimized for pastoral use. The panels also provide protection against extreme weather events, positioning the installations as multifunctional assets for both energy and agriculture.

Construction is expected to begin within weeks, with commissioning slated for 2026. RWE will also monitor agricultural and energy output to assess the performance of these advanced systems. This development follows RWE’s success in last year’s PNRR tender, with two Agri-PV projects already under construction in Italy. Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, highlighted the significance of land optimization and reaffirmed Italy’s leadership in advancing agrivoltaic innovation.

RWE’s presence in Italy spans 17 onshore wind farms totaling 598 MW, with ongoing construction of two new onshore wind projects in the south. Its integrated approach from development to operation reflects a commitment to accelerating Italy’s renewable energy transition and supporting Europe’s sustainable energy agenda.
