RWE and GE Vernova Move Forward with Plans for Next-Generation Hydrogen Power Plant in Germany

(IN BRIEF) RWE is preparing to build an 850 MW hydrogen-compatible combined cycle power plant at its former Voerde site in Germany, supporting the country’s coal phase-out and long-term energy security. The German government’s upcoming framework for hydrogen-compatible gas plant tenders will guide RWE’s participation, with construction expected to begin immediately if the company wins a tender. The plant, planned in partnership with GE Vernova and Tecnicas Reunidas, could begin operations in 2030 using at least 50% hydrogen, with future potential for full hydrogen operation. RWE highlights the need for a rapid approval process to ensure timely delivery of the project, reinforcing its commitment to advancing hydrogen-ready power generation.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 27-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE is preparing to construct a hydrogen-compatible combined cycle power plant with an output capacity of approximately 850 megawatts at the site of its former coal-fired power station in Voerde, Germany. The project forms part of RWE’s strategy to ensure the country’s long-term energy security and contribute to the national coal phase-out, supporting Germany’s transition to a sustainable and resilient energy system.

The German federal government has announced plans to introduce a regulatory framework for hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plant tenders as part of its national power plant strategy. RWE has confirmed its readiness to participate in these tenders and, if successful, will commence construction of the Voerde plant immediately. The new facility would help secure the site’s continued role in energy generation while creating local employment opportunities and supporting regional economic growth.

The former Voerde power plant site offers significant advantages for this next-generation development, including direct access to the planned hydrogen core network pipeline—a key element of Germany’s emerging hydrogen infrastructure.

RWE has already taken major preparatory steps, commissioning an American-Spanish consortium comprising GE Vernova and Tecnicas Reunidas to design and plan the new power plant. The consortium has based its approval planning on proven combined cycle and hydrogen technologies. According to current projections, the Voerde facility could begin electricity generation by 2030, initially operating on a fuel mix containing at least 50% hydrogen, with the flexibility for full conversion to hydrogen in the future.

To ensure timely construction following a successful tender, RWE emphasises the importance of an accelerated approval process that includes early public engagement and transparent communication with stakeholders.

Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation SE, stated:

“We are ready to invest in the construction of new hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power stations. Our approval planning for Voerde is well underway, enabling us to complete the project by 2030. However, we now need swift clarity from the federal government regarding the announced tendering regime.”

The Voerde hydrogen-compatible project represents a major step in RWE’s broader decarbonisation and energy diversification strategy, demonstrating the company’s commitment to driving Germany’s hydrogen economy and securing reliable low-carbon power generation for decades to come.
