REN and ADAI Win National Innovation Award for Natureye Forest-Fire Early-Warning System

(IN BRIEF) REN and ADAI’s Natureye platform—part of the Agenda Transform forestry consortium—has been honoured with the National Innovation Award for Utilities, Mobility and Infrastructure. Natureye deploys over 80 multispectral cameras on high-voltage towers to monitor one million hectares of at-risk forest. Data and predictive models stream into CENTRODEC in Coimbra, enabling early validation of fire alarms and proactive response planning. Sponsored by Jornal de Negócios, BPI Bank, Claranet, ANI, COTEC, and Nova SBE, the award recognises Natureye’s impactful, technology-driven approach to rural fire prevention and REN’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability.

(PRESS RELEASE) LISBON, 10-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — REN, in partnership with ADAI – Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics at the University of Coimbra – has won the National Innovation Award in the Utilities, Mobility and Infrastructure category for its Natureye solution to combat rural fires. The award ceremony took place on 3 July at the Hovione Atrium of Nova SBE in Carcavelos.

Natureye forms part of Agenda Transform, a consortium of 56 organisations across 30 projects dedicated to digitally revolutionising Portugal’s forestry sector. Leveraging over 80 multispectral cameras mounted on REN’s high-voltage towers, the system continuously scans more than one million hectares of high-risk forest—especially in fire-prone regions. Sensor data and predictive algorithms feed into the CENTRODEC decision-support platform in Coimbra, where alerts are validated and analysed. This allows operators to forecast fire behaviour and implement preventive measures well before flames spread.

The National Innovation Award is presented by Jornal de Negócios with support from BPI Bank, Claranet Portugal, ANI (National Innovation Agency), COTEC Portugal, and Nova SBE. Now in its third edition, the award celebrates projects that address real-world challenges through cutting-edge technology.

“This accolade reflects the dedication of all teams involved and demonstrates how targeted innovation can deliver transformative solutions,” said REN. “We remain committed to driving sustainability, safety, and resilience in Portugal’s energy and infrastructure sectors.”
