Professor Tom Crick to join Glas Cymru Board as a Non-Executive Director

Nelson, Wales, 27-Sep-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Glas Cymru, which owns Welsh Water, has today confirmed that Professor Tom Crick is to join its Board as a Non-Executive Director, succeeding Professor Stephen Palmer who is retiring from the Board at the end of the year.

Professor Crick, a Professor of Computer Science & Public Policy at Cardiff Metropolitan University, will join the Board from 1 October 2017.

Professor Crick, 36, has previously advised the Office of the Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales and is currently an expert adviser to the Welsh Government and Chair of the recently-announced National Network for Excellence in Science & Technology, a £4 million investment by the Welsh Government.

He is a graduate and PhD alumnus of the University of Bath, and has served in a number of high-profile advisory positions in Wales and across the UK. He was appointed an MBE in June in the Queen’s 2017 Birthday Honours list, for services to computer science and the promotion of computer science education.

Professor Crick, who lives in Cardiff, is the Nesta Data Science Fellow, a Fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute, an HEA National Teaching Fellow and previously a Science Media Fellow with BBC Wales. He is Vice-President of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and sits on the National Assembly for Wales’ Cross-Party Group on Science and Technology; he has previously been a Trustee of the British Science Association and the Campaign for Science & Engineering.

In addition, he chaired the Welsh Government’s review of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) curriculum in 2013, as well as chairing the development of a new Digital Competence Framework for all schools in 2016, as part of the Curriculum for Wales reforms.

Professor Crick will join the Board with effect from 1 October 2017 and will formally stand for election as a director at the next Annual General Meeting in July 2018.
