OMV Secures 67 GWh in Renewable Energy Agreements, Boosting Decarbonization Efforts at Key Facilities

(IN BRIEF) OMV has entered power purchase agreements with VERBUND and ImWind to secure 67 GWh of renewable electricity each year, meeting over 35% of its Schwechat refinery and Adria Wien Pipeline’s power needs. The supply, 65% from hydropower and 35% from wind, is expected to cut OMV’s CO2 emissions by approximately 11,000 tons annually. This initiative aligns with OMV’s Strategy 2030 decarbonization goals, with VERBUND supplying hydropower and ImWind providing wind energy starting later this year and early next.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 29-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — OMV has secured long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with VERBUND and ImWind to supply 67 GWh of green electricity annually, supporting over 35% of the external power needs at its Schwechat refinery and the Adria Wien Pipeline. This renewable energy supply—sourced 65% from hydropower and 35% from wind—will reduce OMV’s carbon emissions by around 11,000 tons annually, totaling approximately 60,300 tons across the agreement term, helping the company meet its decarbonization goals outlined in its Strategy 2030.

Alfred Stern, OMV AG’s CEO and Chairman, emphasized the importance of these agreements: “These partnerships with VERBUND and ImWind are instrumental in achieving our low-carbon ambitions and strengthening the sustainable energy supply for our facilities. As part of our Strategy 2030, we’re committed to expanding our renewable energy portfolio to drive our decarbonization efforts.”

Starting in January 2025, VERBUND, Austria’s leading electricity provider, will supply OMV with 44 GWh of hydropower annually for four years. ImWind, a pioneering Austrian wind power company, will provide 23.5 GWh of wind energy annually, beginning in November 2024, under an eight-year contract. This total green energy supply equates to the yearly consumption of around 16,000 households, marking a substantial step in OMV’s transition to renewable energy.

1  Based on E-Control (2022), consumption of 4,200 KWh/year for a three-person household.
