(IN BRIEF) Alstom has been awarded contracts worth several hundred million euros by Larsen & Toubro to deliver 39 driverless Metropolis trainsets, advanced CBTC Urbalis Forward signalling, and five years of maintenance for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The 35.3 km elevated corridor, stretching from Wadala to Kasarvadavali with 32 stations, is set to become one of the city’s longest metro routes. All trainsets will be designed and manufactured in India, with components sourced from Alstom’s sites in Bangalore, Sri City, Coimbatore, and Savli. The system will feature driverless GoA4 operation and enhanced passenger comfort, supported by Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance services. Building on its long partnership with Mumbai’s metro network, Alstom is helping reduce congestion, cut emissions, and enhance sustainable urban mobility.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 26-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom has been selected to deliver 234 Metropolis metro cars—configured into 39 driverless six-car trainsets—along with its advanced Urbalis Forward CBTC signalling system and five years of comprehensive maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Green Line). The agreement, signed with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) under a contract awarded by the Mumbai Metro Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), is valued at several hundred million euros.

Mumbai Metro Line 4 will extend 35.3 km from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, featuring 32 elevated stations. Once operational, it will become one of the longest lines in the city and improve connectivity to the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other metro routes. The deployment of Alstom’s rolling stock and signalling technology is expected to reduce congestion, cut travel times, and significantly lower carbon emissions in India’s financial capital.

“Being chosen for the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 4 project further strengthens our long-standing association with the city of Mumbai,” said Ling Fang, Region President, Asia Pacific, Alstom. “Our proven solutions are already serving millions of passengers on other Mumbai Metro lines, and we are proud to continue supporting the development of sustainable urban transport for the city.”

Designed and built in India

In line with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, all 39 trainsets will be designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bangalore and manufactured at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. Propulsion will be produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies in Savli, Gujarat. The Sri City plant, with a production capacity of 480 cars annually, has already delivered driverless Metropolis trainsets for metro systems in Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai, as well as international projects in Montreal and Sydney.

Each train will feature a modern passenger-friendly design with enhanced accessibility, including wheelchair spaces, bicycle racks, and efficient airflow cooling. Safety and reliability are supported by robust braking systems and built-in cybersecurity measures.

Advanced signalling and operations

Alstom’s Urbalis Forward CBTC technology, developed in Bangalore with support from over 1,000 engineers, will enable Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), commonly known as full driverless operation. The Urbalis Vision platform will be installed at the central Operation Control Centre at Mandale depot and a backup centre at Mogharpada, ensuring smooth and safe operations across the network.

The system will automatically regulate train headways, manage safety protocols, and provide resilience against cyber threats. Together, the CBTC signalling and driverless fleet will form a fully integrated solution delivering high capacity, reliability, and safety for Line 4’s commuters.

Maintenance and long-term reliability

Under the agreement, Alstom will provide FlexCare Perform maintenance services for five years, covering both the fleet and signalling systems. The service will ensure that trains operate at maximum reliability and availability throughout the early years of Line 4 operations.

Continuing a long partnership with Mumbai

Alstom has a long history of supporting Mumbai’s metro development. Its driverless trains and signalling solutions are already in use on the Aqua Line, one of India’s longest underground metro lines, which now carries over 1.6 million passengers daily. In addition, Alstom is providing signalling and telecom systems for Lines 2 and 7, and signalling for Lines 7A and 9.

Globally, Alstom’s Metropolis metros serve more than 80 customers, while its CBTC solutions are deployed on 190 metro lines in 32 countries, making the company a worldwide leader in driverless and digital signalling technologies.
