KPN Leads Effort to Provide Complete Mobile Coverage for Passengers on HSL Breda-Amsterdam Route

(IN BRIEF) Passengers traveling between Breda and Amsterdam on the HSL route can now enjoy consistent mobile coverage throughout the entire journey, including the tunnels. This improvement follows the successful installation of mobile antennas in the Groene Hart Tunnel, completing coverage in all five tunnels on the HSL track. The project, led by KPN in collaboration with Odido and Vodafone, aimed to address the loss of signal caused by tunnels, which previously hindered passengers’ ability to use mobile services. The installation process, requiring special techniques due to the high-speed nature of the trains, was supported by ProRail and Infraspeed. Ongoing monitoring and optimization will ensure the continued reliability of the mobile network.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 3-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Train passengers traveling along the HSL route between Breda and Amsterdam can now enjoy uninterrupted mobile coverage throughout the journey, including within the tunnels. This recent milestone comes after extensive work to enhance mobile service in the seven-kilometer-long Groene Hart Tunnel, the final of five tunnels to be equipped with mobile antennas in recent years. The days of encountering a “no mobile coverage” message while traveling on the HSL track are now over.

Frequent tunnel passages had previously caused mobile signal drops, frustrating passengers who often rely on their phones for work or entertainment during their train rides. To address this issue, Dutch mobile operators have collaborated over the past several years to improve the mobile experience for travelers on this specific route. As the lead operator, KPN, in partnership with Odido and Vodafone, spearheaded the installation of mobile infrastructure within the HSL tunnels.

The installation process posed unique challenges due to the high-speed nature of train travel through these tunnels. The systems needed to be specially designed to withstand the pressures associated with rapid movement. Moreover, the work could only take place during scheduled downtime to minimize disruption. With support from ProRail and Infraspeed, the operators successfully completed the installation, ensuring reliable mobile coverage throughout all five tunnels. The network will now undergo continuous monitoring and optimization to maintain and improve performance.
