Gwinnett County Deploys 400-Intersection Smart Corridor with Kapsch TrafficCom’s Connected Tech

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has completed the deployment of a large-scale smart corridor in Gwinnett County, Georgia, spanning nearly 400 intersections. The project equips 180 public and emergency fleet vehicles with onboard CV technology and includes applications like emergency vehicle preemption, transit signal priority, work zone safety alerts, pedestrian presence detection, and rail crossing congestion alerts. Supported by Georgia DOT and local partners, the initiative uses Kapsch’s Connected Mobility Control Center to enable remote asset management. This deployment positions Gwinnett County—and Georgia more broadly—as a leader in connected vehicle innovation and a model for smart mobility advancement.

(PRESS RELEASE) DULUTH, GA, Unites States, 23-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ —  Kapsch Group (VIE: KTCG), a leader in innovative transportation solutions, announces that Kapsch TrafficCom has successfully completed the implementation of a county-wide smart corridor project in Gwinnett County, Georgia, marking a pivotal step toward enhancing road safety and traffic efficiency for nearly 1 million residents.

Now entering its operations and maintenance phase, the project spans nearly 400 intersections and delivers Kapsch TrafficCom’s full suite of Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies. At the heart of this initiative is the deployment of onboard units (OBUs) across approximately 180 fleet vehicles, including public buses, emergency responders, and maintenance vehicles—enabling them to communicate seamlessly with roadside infrastructure.

The system integrates several advanced safety and efficiency applications, including:

  • Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP): Providing green-light priority to emergency vehicles for faster and safer travel

  • Transit Signal Priority (TSP): Minimizing delays for public transport to improve reliability

  • Work Zone Alerts: Enhancing safety for road maintenance crews by issuing real-time notifications

  • Pedestrian Presence Detection: Protecting vulnerable road users in high-traffic zones

  • Rail Crossing Congestion Alerts: Preventing traffic back-ups and improving intersection safety near railway lines

“With this project, Gwinnett County is showing what’s possible when connected vehicle technologies are implemented with interoperability and community benefit in mind,” said JB Kendrick, President of Kapsch TrafficCom North America. “This corridor is not only improving safety and mobility in Georgia—it’s setting a new standard for neighboring counties and beyond.”

First announced in late 2021, the project is a collaboration between the Georgia Department of Transportation, Gwinnett Department of Transportation, Kapsch TrafficCom, and 360ns. It leverages Kapsch’s Connected Mobility Control Center (CMCC), an advanced software platform that enables operators to monitor, manage, and remotely configure all CV system assets in real time.

More than 100 Kapsch OBUs and 90 third-party roadside units have been integrated into the corridor. Situated northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County is one of the state’s fastest-growing regions. This milestone project further cements Georgia’s national leadership in connected vehicle technology and its commitment to Vision Zero—a goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries.
