(IN BRIEF) RWE will invest €230 million to build Germany’s largest battery storage system at the Gundremmingen energy site in Bavaria, transforming the former nuclear power plant area into a center for renewable energy innovation. The 400 MW facility, featuring 700 MWh of storage capacity, will utilize advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries and ultra-fast inverters to stabilize the grid and store renewable energy. Attended by Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder, the groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone in RWE’s commitment to expanding energy storage infrastructure. Scheduled to begin operations in 2028, the project strengthens RWE’s position as a global leader in battery storage development.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN / GUNDREMMINGEN, 30-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has announced the construction of Germany’s largest battery storage facility at the former nuclear power plant site in Gundremmingen, Bavaria, marking a major step in the nation’s clean energy transition. The large-scale system will deliver 400 megawatts (MW) of power with a storage capacity of 700 megawatt hours (MWh), helping to stabilize the grid and support renewable energy integration. The company is investing around €230 million in the project, with commissioning planned for 2028.

A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place in Gundremmingen, attended by Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder, who praised the site’s continued importance to the state’s energy infrastructure. “Gundremmingen remains a cornerstone of Bavaria’s energy supply,” Söder said. “Alongside this new battery facility, a 55-hectare solar park and a gas-fired power station are planned for the area. The 400 MW system will play a crucial role in grid stabilization during periods without wind or sunlight. As Bavaria’s energy demand grows, this project represents both innovation and reliability.”

Dr. Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG, emphasized the company’s vision for a sustainable energy future: “The energy system of tomorrow will rely on powerful, flexible storage solutions. With this project, we’re reaffirming our commitment to transforming existing sites like Gundremmingen into anchors of clean energy innovation. This battery installation is just the beginning of what’s to come.”

Once operational, the facility will be capable of continuously delivering electricity for nearly two hours at full capacity. Over 200 specialized containers housing approximately 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells will be installed on-site. Equipped with advanced control systems and over 100 ultra-fast inverters, the batteries can supply or absorb electricity within milliseconds—ensuring grid stability and enhancing resilience in times of fluctuating renewable generation.

This landmark project is part of RWE’s global expansion in energy storage infrastructure. The company currently operates 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of battery storage capacity worldwide, with an additional 2.7 GW under construction. As a key component of its long-term growth strategy, RWE plans to significantly increase its energy storage capabilities across Europe, the U.S., and Australia.

The Gundremmingen site, once home to one of Germany’s most prominent nuclear power stations, is now being repurposed as a hub for renewable energy innovation. Following the shutdown of its two reactor units in 2017 and 2021, the site remains active with about 400 RWE employees overseeing decommissioning operations and contributing to the company’s energy transformation initiatives.
