Gasum Supports Raseborgs Energi in Electrifying District Heating with Multi-Market Optimization

(IN BRIEF) Gasum is providing its Multi-Market Optimization (MMO) service to Raseborgs Energi, which is commissioning a new electric boiler to electrify its district heating production. The boiler will allow Raseborgs Energi to switch between electricity and biofuel-based heat production based on market prices, enhancing flexibility and reducing costs. The MMO service supports optimization across several energy markets, offering new revenue streams and sustainability benefits. This partnership also helps Raseborgs Energi work toward its goal of reducing biofuel use by 40% by 2030, while maintaining reliable and affordable energy services for the Raseborg community.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 9-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum is enabling greater flexibility and sustainability in district heating production through its Multi-Market Optimization (MMO) service, now being adopted by local Finnish energy provider Raseborgs Energi. As part of a major modernization effort, Raseborgs Energi is commissioning a new electric boiler to electrify its district heating system and capitalize on fluctuating electricity prices.

The electric boiler, set to be operational by the end of June, replaces an older oil-based backup system and will operate during periods of low electricity prices. When electricity prices are high, the company will switch to heat production using biofuels at its existing facilities. This hybrid approach allows the energy company to respond dynamically to market conditions, reduce costs, and strengthen the resilience of its heating network.

By leveraging Gasum’s MMO service, Raseborgs Energi gains the ability to optimize heat production across various markets including imbalance, balancing power, and reserve services. This allows the company not only to reduce operating costs but also to tap into new revenue streams in an increasingly complex and volatile energy environment.

“In January, we exited traditional electricity retail and redirected our focus toward integrated operations that combine district heating flexibility with electricity market opportunities,” said Frank Hoverfelt, CEO of Raseborgs Energi. “Gasum’s MMO service offers a comprehensive platform for us to optimize energy use and strengthen our business model for the future.”

Ville Pesonen, Vice President of Industry and Transport at Gasum, added, “Gasum’s MMO service has been warmly received by the industry, particularly as energy markets grow more complex. We are pleased to support a local utility like Raseborgs Energi in securing reliable, stable energy services for their community, while aligning with sustainability goals.”

The move also supports Raseborgs Energi’s long-term sustainability strategy, which includes reducing its biofuel usage by 40% by 2030. The decision was driven in part by rising wood chip prices and the need for more sustainable sourcing. The MMO service complements these efforts by optimizing across different energy types, including electricity, gas, heat, and solid fuels.

Gasum’s MMO service includes full market access, advisory and trading support, as well as real-time control, portfolio management, and reporting. It also supports the optimization of energy assets like batteries, heat pumps, and boilers, helping clients manage the entire electricity market value chain from long-term hedging to instant reserve adjustments.
