Expro achieves offshore world record with three-million-pound-rated Blackhawk® Gen III cementing system

(IN BRIEF) Expro has set a new world record in offshore well construction by deploying the heaviest casing string ever achieved, reaching a maximum hook load of 2.849 million pounds. The operation, conducted aboard the Transocean Deepwater Titan for a super major in the Gulf of America, used Expro’s Blackhawk® Gen III Wireless Top Drive Cement Head with SKYHOOK® technology. The Gen III system, engineered for full performance at 15,000 psi and three million pounds of tensile capacity, delivered exceptional safety and efficiency without derating under pressure. Vice President of Well Construction Jeremy Angelle called the record a step-change in offshore cementing, as Expro demonstrated its ability to deliver bespoke, high-capacity solutions for one of the world’s most challenging well construction campaigns.

(PRESS RELEASE) ABERDEEN, 8-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Expro has achieved a new global milestone in offshore well construction by deploying the heaviest casing string ever recorded. The record-setting operation was completed in the Gulf of America for a leading super major, using Expro’s advanced Blackhawk® Gen III Wireless Top Drive Cement Head integrated with SKYHOOK® technology.

The achievement took place aboard the Transocean Deepwater Titan, an 8th-generation ultra-deepwater drillship, where the casing deployment surpassed all previous offshore records with a maximum hook load of 2.849 million pounds. This performance underscores Expro’s role as a technology leader in deepwater well construction.

The Blackhawk® Gen III cement head, engineered to sustain 15,000 psi and three million pounds of tensile capacity, enabled the success of this project without requiring performance derating under high-pressure conditions. Combined with SKYHOOK®, which allows cement line make-up without placing personnel above the rig floor, the system enhanced operational safety, efficiency, and reliability under extreme conditions.

Jeremy Angelle, Expro’s Vice President of Well Construction, highlighted the importance of the milestone: “This deployment marks a step-change in offshore cementing, establishing a new benchmark for ultra-deep, high-pressure wells. We are proud to have supported our customer with a high-performance cement head that operated safely and reliably under record-setting loads.”

The operator’s campaign, regarded as one of the most technically demanding well construction projects worldwide, required an innovative solution capable of handling extreme casing hook loads. Expro’s bespoke engineering approach delivered a robust cementing system tailored for such high-stakes environments. With this record, Expro’s Blackhawk® Gen III with SKYHOOK® now stands as the only cementing system in the industry rated for three million pounds, redefining performance standards in offshore operations.
