Empa Names Matthias Sulzer as New Head of Engineering Sciences Department

(IN BRIEF) Empa has appointed Matthias Sulzer as the new Head of the Engineering Sciences Department, effective January 1, 2025. Sulzer, an expert in energy and building technology, will succeed Peter Richner, who will retire in March 2025. Sulzer will also co-lead Empa’s Research Focus Area on the Built Environment and manage the NEST building. Richner will continue part-time with Empa, contributing to the Climate Solutions initiative.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜBENDORF, 27-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Empa has announced the appointment of Matthias Sulzer as the new Head of the Department of Engineering Sciences, effective January 1, 2025. Sulzer, an expert in energy and building technology, will succeed Peter Richner, who is set to retire in March 2025.

Currently a senior scientist at Empa’s Urban Energy System Lab and a lecturer at ETH Zurich, Sulzer brings a wealth of experience in energy management and building technology. He has led various national and international research projects focused on energy system transformation and decarbonization, earning numerous accolades including solar awards and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy’s Watt d’Or prizes.

In addition to leading the Engineering Sciences Department, Sulzer will co-lead Empa’s Research Focus Area on the Built Environment and assume scientific management of the NEST building. Richner, who will retire in March 2025, will remain involved part-time with Empa, contributing to the Climate Solutions initiative in collaboration with Eawag.
