DNV and 20 Industry Leaders Complete Validation of Wind Farm Flow Control for Bankable Deployment

(IN BRIEF) After 18 months of collaboration with 20 leading energy companies, DNV has validated wind farm flow control (WFFC) technology using its LongSim CFD platform. The joint industry project generated the most comprehensive performance dataset to date and agreed on standardized methods for modeling, benefit quantification, and integration feasibility. Results confirm WFFC’s compatibility with existing turbines and quantify clear energy-yield improvements, while LongSim’s accuracy has been proven for farm-scale flow simulations. With consensus on benchmarks and methodology, WFFC is now poised for bankable deployment. Key JIP partners will share insights in a 30 June webinar.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 25-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — DNV has successfully wrapped up a landmark joint industry project (JIP) that validates wind farm flow control (WFFC) technology at scale. Launched in 2023, the collaboration united 20 energy companies to assemble the largest-ever dataset and to pioneer standardized methods for evaluating WFFC performance.

Using DNV’s LongSim simulation platform, the JIP team analyzed extensive field and experimental data, producing precise forecasts of energy-yield gains under real operating conditions. This rigorous validation addresses historical gaps in benefit quantification and modeling consistency, laying the groundwork for WFFC’s commercial viability. Developers, OEMs, and investors can now rely on a unified framework to assess and deploy flow-control upgrades with greater confidence.

“This project elevates wind-farm flow control from a theoretical concept to a bankable solution,” said Ditlev Engel, CEO of DNV Energy Systems. “By forging industry consensus on performance benchmarks and methods, we’ve removed major barriers—uncertainty, fragmented evidence, and inconsistent modeling—that held the technology back. Operators can now expect measurable returns and competitive advantage, accelerating the clean-energy transition.”

Key achievements of the JIP include:

  • Seamless integration: Demonstrated compatibility of WFFC with existing turbine assets.
  • Quantified benefits: Established robust estimates of energy-output improvements using real-world data.
  • Verified modeling: Confirmed LongSim’s reliability for simulating farm-wide flow interactions, providing stakeholders with trustworthy prediction tools.

Astrid Rusås Kristoffersen, DNV’s Director of R&D, added, “The breadth of participation—spanning developers, utilities, OEMs, and energy majors—signals the sector’s commitment to innovation. DNV’s unified methodology empowers partners to scale up WFFC deployments without hesitation.”

With the JIP concluded, select participants are extending their cooperation to refine methodologies further and compile additional data, aiming to cement WFFC as a mainstream, bankable enhancement for wind farms.

DNV and its JIP partners—Iberdrola/ScottishPower, Ørsted, Vattenfall, Shell, Equinor, and others—will unveil the project’s detailed findings in a free webinar on 30 June, 16:00–17:00 CEST.
