Circular Economy in Vehicle Production Gets Boost from German Ministry, Consortium

(IN BRIEF) A consortium of 19 leading industrial companies and research institutes, including BMW and Evonik, is working on developing new processes for using sustainable materials in circular vehicle production. Evonik is contributing its expertise in plastics and recycling additives to the project, which is funded for three years by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection. The goal of the project is to create innovative material concepts and processes for a circular economy in vehicle production. The knowledge gained from the project could be applied to other industrial products and drive circular economy systems in Germany.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 30-Jan-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik (ETR: EVK), one of the world leaders in specialty chemicals, announces that it joins BMW’s “Future Sustainable Car Materials (FSCM)” Project with Plastics Expertise Leading industrial firms and research institutes collaborate on circular automotive solutions German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection funds the project

A 19-member consortium of prominent industrial companies, including BMW Group, Evonik, Thyssenkrupp, Fraunhofer Institute, and Technical University of Munich, is working to develop new processes for sustainable materials in circular vehicle production. Evonik is providing its plastics and recycling additive expertise to the project, which is funded for three years by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.

The “Future Sustainable Car Materials (FSCM)” initiative, launched by BMW, aims to advance innovative material concepts and processes for a circular economy in vehicle production.

“We are pleased to contribute our specialty chemicals expertise to this pioneering consortium of industry leaders and internationally renowned research institutions to develop circular plastics solutions for the automobiles of tomorrow,” said Lauren Kjeldsen, Executive Board Member of Evonik Operations and Head of Smart Materials Division.

Circular economy principles call for materials to remain in the value chain after their useful life to produce new objects, like automotive parts, without fossil resources. Maintaining quality and safety while keeping materials in the cycle is a challenge.

“Our mechanical recycling experts work closely with recyclers to prepare methods for cleaning up plastic parts, such as separating paint at the end of useful life,” said Patrick Glöckner, Head of the Global Circular Plastics Program at Evonik. “We also work with compounders to develop solutions for using the highest possible proportion of recycled plastics in new automotive parts.”

This collaboration allows the consortium to quickly address challenges and find solutions. With the complexity of automotive manufacturing, the participants in the FSCM project believe the knowledge gained can also be applied to other industrial products, such as commercial vehicles, appliances, and drive circular economy systems in Germany.
