BASF Coatings Achieves 100% Renewable Electricity at North American Sites, Reducing CO2 Emissions by 11,000 Tons Annually

(IN BRIEF) As of January 2025, BASF Coatings has successfully transitioned to 100% renewable electricity at its Greenville, Ohio and Blackman Township, Michigan sites, resulting in an anticipated reduction of more than 11,000 tons of CO2 annually. This shift supports BASF’s sustainability goals and helps customers meet their own environmental objectives. The move affects 17 global sites, reducing the overall carbon footprint in the automotive industry. BASF is also implementing innovative solutions, like thin-film technologies and the mass balance approach, to further reduce CO2 emissions. This commitment aligns with BASF’s ongoing efforts to drive climate protection and sustainability across its operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 8-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — As of January 2025, BASF’s Coatings division has successfully transitioned to using 100% renewable electricity at its North American facilities in Greenville, Ohio, and Blackman Township, Michigan. This pivotal move is expected to cut CO2 emissions by more than 11,000 tons annually, benefiting both BASF’s operations and its customers.

At the Greenville site, BASF Coatings manufactures resins, E-Coats, and clearcoats, while the Blackman Township site specializes in surface treatment solutions under BASF’s Chemetall brand, serving the Surface Treatment global business unit. By investing in renewable electricity, BASF aims to reduce its environmental impact, enhance operational sustainability, and assist its customers in reaching their own sustainability objectives. To date, 17 BASF sites across the globe are powered by 100% renewable electricity, resulting in reduced carbon footprints for customers sourcing from these locations. This transition helps minimize the environmental impact across the entire automotive industry value chain.

Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings, remarked, “The shift to renewable electricity is a key driver of change, reinforcing our commitment to meeting our Climate Protection targets. This transformation is not only reducing our operational impact but also enhancing our innovative CO2-reducing solutions, such as thin-film technologies and the mass balance approach, to further support our customers’ green initiatives.”

Frank Naber, Senior Vice President of Chemetall, added, “Sustainability is central to Chemetall’s mission, and by transitioning to 100% renewable electricity at our Blackman Township site, we are taking significant steps to reduce our carbon footprint. This initiative enhances the sustainability of our operations and supports our customers in minimizing their environmental impact, as we expand renewable energy usage across all our global facilities.”

Jeffrey Jones, Vice President of Key Account Management North America OEMs at BASF Coatings, emphasized, “By fully embracing renewable electricity, we not only improve the sustainability of our products but also support the automotive industry in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. This initiative represents a crucial step in empowering our customers’ environmental goals.”
