Arriva to Revive Dormant Kujawsko‑Pomorskie Rail Lines with €5 Million Contract

Arriva to Revive Dormant Kujawsko‑Pomorskie Rail Lines with €5 Million Contract

(IN BRIEF) Arriva Group has won a nearly €5 million contract to operate the Brodnica–Rypin and Wierzchucin–Laskowice rail lines in Poland’s Kujawsko‑Pomorskie region starting December 2026. These routes, inactive for 26 and five years respectively, will offer six daily return journeys and contribute around 320,000 train‑kilometres annually. The award, following a competitive tender, aligns with the province’s modern transport agenda and Arriva’s strategy to expand in liberalised European rail markets. Sian Leydon of Arriva highlighted the social and economic benefits of reinstating these services. Leveraging existing operations—which already account for half of the region’s regional traffic—Arriva will source trains from its Europe‑wide network, demonstrating the group’s scalable approach to high‑quality regional rail provision.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 31-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Arriva Group has secured a €5 million contract to operate two additional regional rail lines in Poland’s Kujawsko‑Pomorskie province, reinforcing its role as a key partner in liberalised European public transport. From December 2026, Arriva will revive the Brodnica–Rypin and Wierzchucin–Laskowice routes—corridors that have lain idle for 26 and five years respectively—restoring vital links for communities that have lacked rail connectivity. Collectively, these services will contribute approximately 320,000 train‑kilometres each year, with at least six return trips daily.

Awarded following a competitive tender, this agreement underscores the region’s forward‑thinking transport policies and Arriva’s proven capability to collaborate with local authorities. It also exemplifies the company’s broader expansion strategy amid Europe’s shift toward open-access rail markets.

Sian Leydon, Managing Director for Mainland Europe at Arriva Group, remarked, “We’re delighted to extend our partnership with the Kujawsko‑Pomorskie region. Relaunching these dormant lines will improve mobility for residents and underscore the benefits of transparent procurement and sustained regional investment. Our goal is to deliver seamless, dependable rail services that connect people and places across Europe.”

Already responsible for half of the region’s regional rail operations—totaling over three million train‑kilometres annually—Arriva will draw on its pan‑European fleet to supply rolling stock for the new lines. This capacity to leverage resources across 11 countries highlights the advantages of scale in providing efficient, customer‑focused transport solutions.
