ABB and Zumtobel Group Unite to Propel Smart Building Innovations and Direct Current Applications

(IN BRIEF) ABB and Zumtobel Group have announced a strategic partnership aimed at advancing smart building solutions and direct current (DC) industrial applications. The collaboration will integrate ABB’s building automation solutions with Zumtobel’s advanced lighting management systems, creating efficient, sustainable environments for commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors. Both companies plan to leverage their expertise to develop sensor-based lighting solutions that enhance energy efficiency and occupant comfort. The partnership will also focus on utilizing DC technology to facilitate renewable energy integration, lower resource consumption, and improve grid stability. Key aspects include the development of integrated smart building solutions and exploration of additional cooperation in prefabricated building solutions and emerging technology standards.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURICH/DORNBIM, 8-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — ABB, a global leader in technology, has joined forces with Austria’s Zumtobel Group, a premier provider of innovative lighting solutions, to form a strategic alliance focused on advancing smart building technologies and direct current (DC) industrial applications. This collaboration aims to deliver integrated, sustainable solutions that add significant value for clients across the commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors.

The partnership seeks to capitalize on the combined strengths of both organizations in the realms of lighting, building automation, and electrification. By seamlessly integrating Zumtobel Group’s state-of-the-art lighting management systems with ABB’s extensive building automation offerings, the collaboration is poised to foster the creation of more efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly smart environments. Together, they will promote the uptake of sensor-based lighting systems that enhance energy efficiency, boost occupant comfort, and optimize the functionality of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Additionally, the partnership will spearhead innovations in the use of DC technology, driving resource-saving initiatives across modern industrial power grids. This shift towards DC technology is expected to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, minimize resource consumption, decrease feed-in power requirements, and ensure stable grids. Both companies are proud members of the Open Direct Current Alliance (ODCA), a working group under ZVEI e.V.

“Our collaborative approach empowers us to tackle innovation, standardization, and sustainability, allowing us to lead in new technology advancements,” remarked Lucy Han, Executive Vice President for Building and Home Automation Solutions at ABB. “Standardization is key for user convenience; as the sector evolves rapidly, simplicity must remain a priority. By partnering with Zumtobel Group, we can provide our customers with comprehensive and innovative solutions for smart buildings and industrial applications.”

The partnership will focus on the joint development of integrated smart building solutions, particularly around Zumtobel’s LITECOM lighting system and continuous-row TECTON DC luminaires, in conjunction with ABB’s DC protection devices and its ABB i-bus® KNX and ABB i-bus® DALI systems.

“Collaborating with ABB enhances our building management capabilities, particularly in sensor-based lighting applications for DALI and KNX,” stated Oliver Vogler, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and M&A at the Zumtobel Group. “Together, we can drive forward innovation in the dynamic fields of smart buildings and energy solutions.”

Furthermore, the two companies will explore additional opportunities for collaboration in prefabricated building solutions and emerging technology standards, such as the cross-manufacturer connection standard Matter and the network protocol Thread.
