Global Standards Experts Gather in Dublin for EU Presidency Event

14-2-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — This is one of the technology concepts which will be discussed at a conference in Dublin today by more than 100 standards experts from Ireland, Europe and the United States. The ‘Role of Standards in Research, Development & Innovation’ is being hosted by NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) as part of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

NSAI wants to highlight the role and importance of standards in new and emerging technologies. “The essence of innovation is to turn ideas into tangible assets, to enhance products, processes and services”, says Minister for Small Business, Mr John Perry T.D. “As businesses grow and new ideas are made real, standards play a vital role in making products ready for market.”

Speaking at the conference, Maurice Buckley, CEO of NSAI, said:
“As more of our day-to-day lives move online, whether it’s banking, shopping or heating our homes and monitoring security alarms, it presents a new set of challenges. By 2017, it is estimated that 160 million homes worldwide will have smart systems that allow them to control and monitor household devices remotely. Standards are central to this kind of innovation, while also helping to protect the public from issues like identity fraud and theft. They inspire consumer confidence and assurance. That’s why today’s event is so important to NSAI and indeed, all of the stakeholders working together internationally to develop standards that meet the ever-changing needs of consumers and businesses.”
