Saku Brewery’s contribution to environmentally friendly production recognized with silver award at the Responsible Entrepreneurship Index competition

Saku Brewery has been participating in the Responsible Entrepreneurship Index competition for the 4th time, and this year for the first time it received a silver award to prove its quality level. Thus the company’s contribution to environmentally friendly production, improvement of market and working environment and involvement of local communities was duly recognized.

Saku, Estonia, 26-Jan-2016 — /EuropaWire/ —  “As a large industrial company and employer we are continuously following principles of responsible entrepreneurship both in our day-to-day activities and in making investment and development plans,” said Margus Kastein, Chairman of the management board of Saku Brewery.  “Having earned the silver award is important recognition for all 350 of Saku employees and, certainly, for the company as a whole”.

According to Kastein, the past year was characterized by several important investment projects that were aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of the company and raising safety levels. There also were a number of initiatives regarding civic activism and community involvement.

“Among the highlights of the past year was renovation of the cooling system which allowed to reduce the potential accident area twofold, as well as to disperse truck traffic and to reduce noise level on the roads of Saku municipality,” said Kastein. “Last autumn we have renewed Saku vehicle park and purchased 40 environmentally friendly hybrid cars”.

“Together with our partners we have organized events in Saku and elsewhere in Estonia, where we have involved local people in renovation of Lottemaa theme park and in providing food supplies to residents of Tallinn Zoo,” adds Kastein.

In order to apply for the quality mark Saku Brewery has answered the respective questionnaire of the Estonian Responsible Entrepreneurship Forum which served as an audit for company’s initiatives and actions in four key areas. For the three previous years Saku Brewery has been winning bronze awards of a responsible company, but this year the commission decided that Saku is worthy of the silver award. The award was handed over to the company by the Minister of Entrepreneurship Liisa Oviir at the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Conference that took place in Tallinn on Friday.

There are three levels of Responsible Entrepreneurship awards – gold, silver and bronze. Companies that achieve over 90% of the hundred possible points earn gold awards. To earn a silver award it is necessary to get over 80% and to earn a bronze award – over 70% of the maximum result.

This year the Responsible Entrepreneurship Index was prepared by Estonian Responsible Entrepreneurship Forum for the 8th time. Ca. 50 Responsible Company awards in total were issued.

The goal of the Responsible Entrepreneurship Index is to help companies analyze how to be more responsible towards social and natural environments, how to form respective sustainable business models and remain economically successful.
