Siemens Desiro SBB DoSto

(IN BRIEF) Siemens has secured a major contract with Swiss Federal Railways to deliver 116 Desiro DoSto double-deck trains, with an option for up to 84 more, in a deal worth around CHF 2 billion. The trains will be introduced from 2031 on the Zurich S-Bahn network and in Western Switzerland, offering increased capacity, improved passenger comfort, and enhanced accessibility. Based on the proven Desiro HC platform, the trains will feature energy-efficient technologies, modern passenger information systems, and sustainable materials such as CO₂-reduced aluminium. The project includes significant local involvement in Switzerland, from testing to maintenance, and reinforces the long-standing partnership between Siemens Mobility and SBB.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 30-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens AG has secured a major rail contract with Swiss Federal Railways for the delivery of 116 six-car Desiro DoSto double-deck trains, with an option for up to 84 additional units. The agreement, valued at approximately CHF 2 billion, represents a significant investment in Switzerland’s commuter rail infrastructure and will support the modernization of high-capacity urban transport networks.

The new trains will be deployed primarily on the Zurich S-Bahn network, with operations scheduled to begin in 2031, and will also serve routes in Western Switzerland. Developed by Siemens Mobility, the Desiro DoSto platform is based on the established Desiro HC architecture, which has already demonstrated reliability and efficiency in multiple countries.

According to Siemens CEO Roland Busch, the contract highlights SBB’s confidence in Siemens’ ability to deliver high-quality rail solutions that meet the country’s expectations for reliability, sustainability, and passenger comfort. He also noted that key project phases—including testing, certification, and operational rollout—will take place in Switzerland, reflecting the company’s strong local presence.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, emphasised that the new trains are designed to meet the demands of growing metropolitan areas, combining high passenger capacity with enhanced comfort and energy efficiency. With more than 440 trains from the Desiro HC family already sold and over 200 million kilometres of operational experience, the platform provides a proven foundation for the new fleet.

Each Desiro DoSto train will offer around 540 seats and feature eight multi-purpose areas to facilitate passenger flow and accessibility. Compared to previous generations, the new trains will deliver approximately 30% more standing space and 10% more seating capacity, addressing increasing demand on busy commuter routes. Low-floor entrances across all doors will improve accessibility for passengers, while upgraded interiors—including adjustable seating, larger tables, and increased legroom in first class—aim to enhance travel comfort.

The trains will also incorporate modern passenger information systems, including larger display screens and visual indicators to assist boarding and alighting. Power outlets will be available in both seating classes, as well as in multi-purpose areas to support charging of devices and e-bikes. Safety features such as additional emergency intercoms will further enhance onboard security.

From an environmental perspective, the Desiro DoSto trains are engineered for reduced energy consumption through efficient traction systems, integrated heat pump technology, and intelligent energy management. The car bodies are constructed using fully CO₂-reduced aluminium, contributing to lower lifecycle emissions and improved sustainability performance.

Production will involve multiple locations, with car body manufacturing planned in Krefeld, Germany, while project management, testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities will be carried out in Switzerland. Siemens Mobility’s long-standing presence in the country, spanning more than a century, supports close collaboration with local partners and ensures alignment with national operational requirements.

The contract builds on an established partnership between Siemens Mobility and SBB, which has included the deployment of over 180 Vectron locomotives that play a key role in freight transport both within Switzerland and across international routes.
