ABB Strengthens Sustainability Leadership with Dual Climate and Water A List Recognition and AWS Gold Certification

ABB Strengthens Sustainability Leadership with Dual Climate and Water A List Recognition and AWS Gold Certification

(IN BRIEF) ABB has earned A ratings for both climate change and water stewardship in CDP’s 2025 rankings, securing a place on the Climate Change A List for the third consecutive year and joining the Water A List for the first time. The double A rating places ABB among the top one percent of companies assessed globally and reflects its strengthened disclosures, governance, and water risk management practices. The recognition is complemented by the AWS Standard Gold certification awarded to ABB India’s Nelamangala factory, highlighting site-level leadership in sustainable water management and reinforcing ABB’s broader commitment to climate action and responsible resource use.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURICH, 16-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ABB has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by earning A scores for both climate change and water stewardship in CDP’s 2025 rankings. For the first time, the global technology company has been included on CDP’s Water A List, while also securing a place on the Climate Change A List for the third consecutive year. This dual recognition positions ABB among the top one percent of the 22,100 companies assessed worldwide that achieved a double A rating.

The inclusion on both A Lists reflects ABB’s strengthened disclosures, enhanced transparency, and continued progress in managing climate- and water-related risks across its global operations and value chain. The achievement underscores ABB’s leadership in integrating sustainability into corporate governance, operational practices, and supplier engagement.

ABB has steadily improved its water security performance in recent years, advancing from a B score in 2023 to an A- in 2024 and reaching a full A rating in 2025. Water stewardship has become an increasingly critical focus for the company as climate change, population growth, and industrial demand intensify pressure on freshwater resources. ABB recognizes water as a finite and shared resource and is committed to responsible water use throughout its operations, particularly in regions facing elevated water stress.

To support this approach, ABB conducts annual water risk assessments across all of its approximately 320 global sites, with particular attention to locations in water-stressed areas. In 2024, 91 sites were identified in regions of increased water stress. ABB has committed to requiring all sites in such regions to complete a water stewardship self-assessment by the end of 2026, followed by targeted interventions to mitigate water-related risks. The company actively encourages alignment with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) framework, which promotes responsible water use, quality management, and governance through multi-stakeholder collaboration at the watershed level.

In parallel with its CDP recognition, ABB has also received validation of its site-level water stewardship efforts. ABB India’s Nelamangala factory has been awarded the AWS Standard certification at the Gold level, making it the first ABB site globally to achieve this distinction. The certification recognizes the site’s advanced water management practices, local innovation, and engagement with surrounding communities.

Located near Bengaluru, a region experiencing severe groundwater depletion due to rapid urbanization and over-extraction, the Nelamangala site has implemented measures to address local water challenges. Approximately 85 percent of treated water at the facility is recycled, enabling groundwater replenishment at a rate nearly 1.25 times higher than consumption. Comprehensive rainwater harvesting initiatives have reduced surface runoff and contributed to an increase of more than 30 meters in local groundwater levels over the past three years. The Gold certification, awarded in December 2025, confirms that the site meets internationally recognized benchmarks for responsible and sustainable water stewardship.

ABB’s inclusion on CDP’s Climate Change and Water A Lists, combined with the AWS certification of its Nelamangala site, highlights the company’s holistic approach to sustainability. By combining innovation, governance, and transparent reporting, ABB continues to position itself at the forefront of efforts to support climate resilience, responsible water management, and a more resource-efficient future.
