(PRESS RELEASE) BARCELONA, 11-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a €4.9 million contract to enhance traffic infrastructure in four districts of Barcelona as part of the city’s ambitious Pla Endreça initiative. The program, launched by the Barcelona City Council with a total budget of €435 million, aims to create cleaner, safer, and more accessible public spaces through more than 3,000 planned actions. This large-scale modernization effort will directly benefit over half a million residents and more than 10 million annual visitors to the Catalan capital.

Under the two-and-a-half-year contract, Kapsch TrafficCom will modernize key traffic control systems, replacing outdated components and improving accessibility for all pedestrians, including those with visual impairments. One of the key features of the project is the installation of new traffic lights equipped for blind pedestrians, ensuring safer crossings throughout the targeted districts. Other upgrades include the deployment of modern EcoTrafix™ controllers, the installation of fiber optic communications, uninterruptible power supply systems, and retractable bollards for enhanced access control.

Juan Zamakona, General Manager of Kapsch TrafficCom Spain and Portugal, said the initiative marks a pivotal step in the city’s transition toward sustainable mobility. “Barcelona is taking a major step toward a smarter, safer, and more sustainable urban mobility network. Through this contract, we will upgrade hundreds of traffic management components and enhance accessibility for all. With more than 30 years of maintenance experience in Barcelona, Kapsch is ideally positioned to deliver a reliable and future-proof system,” he stated.

Beyond infrastructure upgrades, Kapsch TrafficCom will ensure 24/7 maintenance of Barcelona’s intersection systems, including blind pedestrian aids, vehicle detection loops, priority bus systems, access control, and fire brigade corridors. A critical part of the project involves integrating the newly installed traffic controllers into the city’s central traffic management platform. To ensure compatibility and smooth operation, these systems will undergo rigorous testing to meet Barcelona’s strict performance and communication standards.

The new contract builds upon Kapsch TrafficCom’s long-standing partnership with the city. The company already holds the primary maintenance contract for Barcelona’s northern half and has provided traffic management services there for over three decades. This latest agreement strengthens Kapsch’s ongoing contribution to transforming Barcelona into a model for modern, inclusive, and sustainable urban mobility.
