Schindler to equip Bogotá’s first metro line with fully accessible elevators and heavy-duty escalators

(IN BRIEF) Schindler will serve as the exclusive supplier of all elevators and escalators for Line 1 of Bogotá’s first metro system, a fully automated, driverless transit network expected to transport over one million passengers daily by 2028. The 23.9-kilometer line will feature 16 elevated stations, ten of which will connect to the city’s BRT network. Schindler will provide high-performance, accessibility-focused elevators and heavy-duty escalators, all linked to its Medellín Technical Operations Center for 24/7 remote monitoring. The project employs BIM and RAMS to optimize coordination, efficiency, and reliability, ensuring high performance throughout its lifecycle.

(PRESS RELEASE) EBIKON, 8-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Schindler has been selected as the exclusive supplier of all elevators and escalators for the inaugural line of Bogotá’s new elevated metro system. Line 1, spanning 23.9 kilometers with 16 elevated stations, is expected to carry more than one million passengers daily once it begins operations in 2028.

This landmark project marks the Colombian capital’s first metro system, delivering a fully automated, driverless transit solution designed to offer fast, reliable, and modern transportation. Ten stations will connect directly with Bogotá’s existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network, helping to ease congestion and improve overall urban mobility.

“We are incredibly proud to provide our vertical mobility solutions for this historic project,” said Vikén Martarian, responsible for the Americas and Escalators on Schindler’s Group Executive Committee. “This initiative will enhance connectivity across Bogotá and ensure residents, workers, and visitors can move smoothly through the city’s new stations.”

Schindler’s contribution will include high-performance mid-rise elevators and heavy-duty escalators engineered specifically for the demands of public transport. All elevators will be fully accessible, featuring zero-step entry, user-friendly controls, and designs that cater to passengers with reduced mobility.

Each unit will be linked to Schindler’s Technical Operations Center (TOC) in Medellín, enabling 24/7 remote monitoring. Using the Schindler ActionBoard platform, operators will receive real-time status updates and actionable performance insights to maximize operational uptime and passenger experience.

The project also leverages advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) analysis. BIM provides a unified digital model for all stakeholders, improving coordination, efficiency, and resource use, while RAMS employs quantitative modeling to predict long-term system performance and reliability.

Construction of Line 1 began in October 2020 and remains on schedule for completion in 2028, ushering in a new era of accessible, sustainable urban transit for Bogotá.
