Snam’s BW Singapore Unit Successfully Commissioned, Strengthening Italy’s Energy Diversification

(IN BRIEF) The BW Singapore regasification unit in Ravenna has completed commissioning and will soon begin operations, adding 5 billion cubic meters to Italy’s LNG regasification capacity. This will bring Italy’s total regasification capacity to 28 billion cubic meters annually, diversifying the country’s energy supply routes. The expansion supports Italy’s efforts to reduce dependency on traditional energy sources and ensure energy security in the future.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 29-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The BW Singapore regasification unit, moored 8.5 kilometers offshore Ravenna, has successfully completed its commissioning process within the scheduled timeframe. The unit, purchased by Snam in July 2022, marks a significant step in enhancing Italy’s energy infrastructure, particularly in the diversification of natural gas supply routes.

With the final authorizations from the relevant authorities set to be received shortly, regasification operations are scheduled to begin in May 2025. The unit will make its capacity available through competitive auction procedures in accordance with Italy’s regulatory framework. The BW Singapore unit, along with the Italis LNG terminal in Piombino, both have an annual regasification capacity of 5 billion cubic meters.

The operationalization of the BW Singapore unit increases Italy’s total regasification capacity to 28 billion cubic meters annually. This marks a key milestone, as it brings Italy’s import capacity in line with the volume of natural gas imported from Russia in 2021, covering 45% of the country’s domestic gas demand. The expanded capacity supports Italy’s growing need for diverse energy sources, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is integral to energy security and supply diversification.

LNG has been playing a crucial role in diversifying Italy’s energy sources, with LNG meeting 25% of Italy’s gas demand in 2024. In the first part of 2025, Italy has already received approximately 60 LNG tankers, with half of them arriving from the USA, marking a significant increase from the previous year. LNG tankers from Qatar and various African countries have also contributed to the influx of gas, providing almost 6 billion cubic meters of LNG, representing about 30% of Italy’s imported gas volume.

This expansion, with the entry into operation of the Ravenna terminal, will enhance Italy’s energy resilience and security by diversifying supply routes and increasing the flexibility of its natural gas import capacity. The further integration of LNG into Italy’s energy mix reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to ensuring sustainable, secure, and diverse energy sources for the future.
