Terna Invests €45 Million in Upgrading Sardinia’s Electricity Grid

(IN BRIEF) Terna, under the leadership of Giuseppina Di Foggia, is set to invest approximately 45 million euros in enhancing the resilience, reliability, and sustainability of the electricity grid in the Alghero and Putifigari municipalities of Sassari province, Sardinia. The project entails the construction of two new underground cable connections spanning approximately 20 km to link the “Alghero South” Primary Cabin to the existing 150 kV “Padria-Alghero” line. This initiative aims to replace 4 km of existing overhead power lines and 8 pylons, effectively reducing the environmental impact on the community while reinforcing the grid’s capacity to withstand extreme weather events. Project documentation will be available for public consultation, inviting feedback from stakeholders to ensure transparency and community involvement in the development process. Terna’s commitment to upgrading the regional electricity grid underscores its dedication to enhancing infrastructure resilience and sustainability in Sardinia.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 13-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna has published notice of the plots of land in the municipalities of Alghero and Putifigari which may be affected by works on two new underground cable connections in the province of Sassari, in the wake of the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security launching the required authorisation process.

The project, in which the company headed by Giuseppina Di Foggia will invest around 45 million euros, involves connecting the new “Alghero South” Primary Cabin, which belongs to the local distributor, to the existing 150 kV “Padria-Alghero” line. This will be achieved by constructing two underground cables with an overall length of approximately 20 km. The new infrastructure will allow the demolition of around 4 km of existing overhead power lines, for a total of 8 pylons which currently cross the municipalities involved.

The work will serve to increase the resilience of the electricity system in the face of extreme weather events, as well as boosting the reliability of the local grid thanks to the construction of new supply routes, while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of the infrastructure on the community.

The project documentation will be available for consultation at the offices of the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the Region of Sardinia and the Municipalities of Alghero and Putifigari. Written observations may be submitted to the above Ministry and to Terna, for information, within 30 days of publication of the notice.

Terna, which has around 200 people working daily on the development and maintenance of the regional electricity grid, manages over 4,400 km of high and extra-high-voltage power lines and 29 electrical substations in Sardinia.
